Role Description

Zoetis is the largest animal health company in the world with an industry-leading research and development team. Zoetis Veterinary Medicine Research and Development, Biological Analytical Sciences, in Kalamazoo, MI, is seeking an Analytical Scientist at the Senior Scientist level. The successful candidate will possess a strong foundation in assay development, particularly regarding glycoproteins. The candidate must be highly motivated to contribute to the characterization and novel method development for biological products. Agility in data analytics is highly preferred. Self-motivation, excellent problem-solving skills and communication, and an ability to work independently and within a group are essential to this role.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead assay method development, optimization, qualification/validation, and method transfer studies. Develop and/or adopt new analytical technology, as appropriate, to advance programs with significant analytical technical and timeline challenges.
  • Maintain familiarity with scientific literature and apply new knowledge appropriately to projects.
  • Convey complex and nuanced concepts to interdisciplinary teams through oral and written presentations, and reports.
  • Work in collaboration with other scientists to advance the development of state-of-the-art techniques to characterize biological products, identify degradation pathways, and define critical quality attributes.
  • Develop high-throughput and/or automated methodologies for sample preparation.
  • Perform analytical methods necessary for the characterization and release of active biologicals.
  • Develop creative solutions to complex and sometimes ambiguous problems.
  • Document and communicate results in electronic laboratory notebooks, technical reports, and oral presentations.
  • Have a basic understanding and utilize the statistical methods employed in analytical sciences. Partner with statistics group to design experiments and report data.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum: PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related biotechnology fields with 1-3 years of experience in a relevant field.
  • MS in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related biotechnology fields with 5+ years of experience in a relevant field.
  • Academic or industry experience in a laboratory setting, specifically in bacterial or viral characterization and titration
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work flexibly in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
  • Desirable: Experience in the fields of analytical methods and development, molecular biology, carbohydrate vaccines, and recombinant expression systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, analyze and interpret bio-analytical, assay development, immunology methods, process development, vaccine manufacturing, and vaccine development experiments.

Technical Skills Requirements

Required:

  • Solid understanding of protein structure and post-translational modifications (particularly glycans)
  • Technical knowledge in analytical assays (ELISA, binding kinetics, lectin binding assays, Western blot, epitope mapping, standard molecular biology techniques)
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive analytical reports and presentations, conveying findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with biologic and biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes including cell culture, purification, and formulation.
  • Skills and experience in experimental design, technical problem solving and continuous improvement; deepens technical knowledge through exposure and continuous learning.
  • Knowledge of regulatory guidelines used for vaccines.
