Job Description

The Summer Horticultural Internship at Mizzou offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience across all Landscape Services divisions, including turf and irrigation, landscape construction, horticulture, and arbor care. Interns will rotate through various teams, working with experienced staff and certified professionals, gaining valuable skills and knowledge in landscape maintenance and design on the over 1,200-acre Mizzou campus, which is also a registered botanical garden.

The Francis quadrangle, in the historic center of campus, is the one of the most photographed lawn in the state. We have 18 specialty gardens, native plant areas, lawns, extensive tree canopy, recreation spaces and tree trails.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the maintenance of lawns, specialty gardens, native plant areas, tree trails, and recreation spaces.
  • Assist with turf care, mowing, irrigation, and tree work, including arbor care and maintenance of the extensive tree canopy.
  • Work with the in-house designer to evaluate new planting sites and perform cost estimation.
  • Engage in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices for both turf and landscape areas.
  • Develop plant identification skills through hands-on experience.
  • Provide support for events and participate in projects across the landscape service divisions.
  • Visit and learn from the athletic and golf programs to broaden your exposure to different horticultural practices.

7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Monday - Friday

Minimum Qualifications

A job offer for this position is contingent on passing a physical examination to determine if the candidate possesses the physical capabilities necessary to perform the essential functions.

  • High School graduate or an equivalent combination of education and experience, from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities can be acquired, is necessary.
  • Ability on a daily basis to:
    • Shovel snow, climb ladders and operate heavy, power-operated mowing and snow removal equipment
    • Grasp, lift, carry and set down heavy objects (50-75 lbs.)
  • A valid driver's license may be required for certain positions.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous gardening experience or coursework in horticulture, turf care, or landscape design is preferred.
  • Must be responsible, self-motivated, and able to handle the physically demanding nature of landscape construction and tree work.
  • A valid driver's license which will allow the legal operation of a motor vehicle in the State of Missouri is required; however, a personal vehicle is not necessary.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary: $16.50 per hour
