Rutgers University Libraries ( RUL) sees an innovative and service-oriented History of Medicine (HoM) Processing Archivist at George F. Smith Library at Rutgers Health -Newark. This individual will take a leadership role in the arrangement and description of HoM's holdings, migrate legacy finding aids into the Rutgers Libraries' ArchivesSpace repository, establish a comprehensive collection management infrastructure, and support the information and research needs of library users.
This position will attain intellectual and physical control of the History of Medicine collection. This position will be responsible for developing and implementing plans to acquire, arrange, process, describe, and provide access to archival materials in analog and digital forms, in consultation with the Smith Library, and Special Collections and University Archives faculty librarians/archivists.
This position reports to the Director of Special Collections and University Archives, in New Brunswick, but works on location at Smith Library and collaborates with Health Sciences Libraries faculty and staff. The HoM archivist is a member of the Libraries Faculty, a team of librarians committed to providing first-rate public services to a diverse academic community.

RESPONSIBILITES

  • Survey, appraise, arrange, and describe HoM archives holdings.
  • Provide reference, access, and outreach services for the HoM collections.
  • Develop and implement plans to accession, arrange, describe, and provide access to archival materials in analog and digital forms.
  • Highlight and promote the HoM collection through displays, social media, and news articles.
  • Performs other duties incidental to work described herein.

Minimum Education and Experience
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will have:

  • An ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent master's degree in archives management.
  • Prior professional or pre-professional experience working with documentary material in an archive, or special collections repository.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with, archival techniques and practices.
  • Ability to manage and complete a diverse range of projects in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Demonstrated research and discursive writing skills.
  • The ability to work creatively and effectively, both individually and with a team.
  • Ability to perform physical work common in archives repositories such as moving archives boxes on and off the shelf or pushing a loaded library cart to and from collection storage spaces.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; the ability to work both independently and in a collegial environment; and experience working effectively with a diverse clientele.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One or more years of demonstrated experience arranging, describing, and managing archives or manuscript collections.
  • Demonstrated experience using current and emerging technologies to improve access to archives and/or manuscript collections.
  • Working knowledge of preservation and/or conservation best practices.
  • Knowledge of ArchivesSpace.

SALARY: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Current contractual minimum salary for appointment is $82,694.
STATUS/BENEFITS: Faculty status (Lecturer, calendar year), twenty four-month appointment (non-renewable) retirement plan, life/health insurance, prescription drug, dental and vision plans, tuition remission, 22 vacation days annually.

Overview
Rutgers Biomedical Health Sciences (RBHS): RBHS serves as the umbrella organization for eight schools and seven centers and institutes focused on improving human health. Aligned with Rutgers University - New Brunswick and collaborating with scholars and researchers throughout the university, RBHS established Rutgers as one of the largest academic institutions in the United States providing health care education, research and clinical service and care. In addition, the libraries provide access to resources to clinical faculty and trainees, which are part of Rutgers - Health and the RWJ/Barnabas partnership. With the movement from print to digital, and physical to mobile, just in time access to library resources from classrooms, laboratories, and patient care settings is the expected standard. Our highly skilled librarians provide instruction in all of these settings, and virtually, using web-enabled technologies for those in remote locations.
