DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Scout is a division of the UC Santa Cruz Extension. While UC Scout's home campus is located at 3175 Bowers Avenue in Santa Clara, the UC Scout team is a full-remote team, with individuals making occasional visits to the campus as needed. UC Scout serves high school students, providing online high school courses for students and curricula for educators.

UC Scout's growing team comprises five departments: instructional design and media, academics, support, outreach, and business intelligence. The team consists of approximately 50 full-time staff and 70 part-time employees. UC Scout works closely with UCSC Extension support staff, including IT, finance, and the office of the Dean to support UC Scout's goals.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Learning Innovation Director, the Instructional Design Supervisor will direct the Instructional Design team, overseeing course development and revisions to courses in UC Scout's catalog. This role applies expertise in instructional design, multimedia, accessibility, and online learning to create engaging, standards-aligned courses. The supervisor will collaborate with senior leaders, production/media professionals, and the Academic department to develop, revise, and maintain courses.

The incumbent will function as an expert on instructional design best practices, helping to ensure ADA and copyright compliance, and provide training to Instructional Designers, subject-matter experts, and course project team members as needed. Through strategic delegation and execution of mission-aligned tasks, the Instructional Design Supervisor ensures that diverse course and learner needs are met, while contributing to the organization's short and long-term goals.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $94,000 - $106,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

50% - Instructional Design & Team Supervision

  • Leadership in Course Development: Applies expertise in executing instructional design, learning management system usage and maintenance, and process/asset documentation. Supervises the Instructional Design team toward achieving individual and team goals while adhering to established schedules. Fosters a collaborative and innovative work environment.
  • Project Management: Demonstrates organization and attention to detail while supervising instructional designers, completing instructional design projects, and supporting successful course/catalog project execution. Establishes reasonable yet ambitious project goals while using technical judgment to manage and oversee tasks and consistently modeling and helping establish best practices.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Facilitates and tracks communication and collaboration among team members, other departments, and external stakeholders. Ensures that instructional design efforts are aligned with organizational objectives, strategic plans, and stakeholder needs.
  • Technical Support & Problem-Solving: Supports the oversight or direct resolution of tickets and departmental support requests submitted to the department's instructional design team. Co-administers the ticketing system with departmental leadership, including analysis/evaluation of ticket data to inform process and course catalog improvements.

20% - Research, Development & Training

  • Departmental Research: Research, prototype, and review new learning technologies for course or system-wide implementation in collaboration with the Instructional Technology Lead. Co-create strategic plans for piloting and implementing new tools and improve the implementation of existing instructional tools (i.e. Canvas) and resources by further incorporating interactivity, personalized learning, and other practices embedded in the UC Scout Course Standards.
  • Professional Development & Training: Identifies training needs and growth opportunities for instructional designers; includes recruitment/onboarding, technical guidance, mentorship, and professional development to enhance skills and performance. Provide training on new ID/course design tools for instructional designers and subject-matter experts.

15% - Quality and Compliance Enforcement

  • UC Scout Course Framework and Standards: Empower the organization, especially instructional designers, to continuously embrace and adhere to the expectations and requirements included in the UC Scout Course Standards. Develop and maintain key resources (i.e. scorecards/trackers, templates, and examples). Support the integration of Course Standards into all phases of all course projects. Support the annual, cross-departmental reviews and updates of the Course Standards and ensure updates are consistently applied.
  • Compliance and Institutional Standards: Ensures that all instructional design activities comply with relevant standards (i.e. UC Electronic Accessibility Policy) and regulations, including ADA and copyright requirements. Maintains accurate documentation and records of instructional design processes and outcomes.

15% - Partnerships & Consultation

  • Partnership Cultivation and Maintenance: Supports partnerships and cross-departmental workflows to promote organizational collaboration and effectiveness. Builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders, including other Scout departments and external partners or vendors, to support the successful completion of projects, task forces, and other initiatives.
  • Internal Consultation: Facilitates effective internal communications to ensure instructional design alignment with business objectives. Ensures that instructional design project outcomes, initiatives and strategies are communicated clearly across departments to maintain a unified direction and achieve organizational goals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Experience successfully completing projects and initiatives centered on accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion, particularly in K-12 education.
  • Experience performing a full range of instructional designer responsibilities for course work in K-12 education
  • Deep understanding of instructional design principles and models relevant in online education and K12 education, including learner-centered course development.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail in all aspects of work, ensuring accuracy and precision in the development and review of educational content.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills to effectively articulate design concepts, achieve conflict resolution, and collaborate with technical teams.
  • Excellent written communication skills .
  • Ability to ensure compliance in all required accreditation, standards, ADA, and copyright areas.
  • Ability to identify and implement process improvements and solutions to enhance course project workflows, course quality, and the user experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's or other relevant advanced degree or certification.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring Instructional Designers and / or Educators.
  • Experience using robust project management methodologies and tools, especially in the context of course development timelines and deliverables.
  • Demonstrated skills in data asset management, data/resource tracking, and LMS platform enhancement.

  • This is a fully remote position, and the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.

  • Ability to travel nationally.
