Position Summary

Under the direction of the Manager Hospital Development & Volunteer, is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships and being the key Versiti Organ & Tissue (VOT) contact/resource with assigned donation service area (DSA) hospitals and customers including clinicians, physicians, technical staff, medical examiners, tissue and eye banks, coroners, and funeral directors. The purpose of the Hospital Relations Specialist is to facilitate quality service and to increase organ and tissue donation referrals to the VOT Organ Procurement Program and Tissue Recovery Program. Acts as a consultant to hospitals for compliance with JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations), CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) and legislation related to organ and tissue donation. Plans and implements hospital relations activities and education/awareness programs regarding organ and tissue donation as well as transplantation and assists VOT clinical staff during organ donation cases by serving as a liaison to hospital staff to facilitate the donation process.



Responsibilities

    Develops, implements, and maintains annual hospital development plans with assigned hospitals.
  • Implements the most appropriate activities directed toward increasing rates of organ and tissue donation at hospitals within the DSA based on assessment of hospital donation data, such as hospital rounds.
  • Establishes and continually improves collaborative working relationships and communication with key hospital staff/customers; acts as a resource and facilitates meetings and follow-up on donation related issues and goals.
  • Works collaboratively with the VOT clinical staff on donation cases, serving as the point of contact with the hospital staff to facilitate communication, resolution of issues, and a smooth overall process throughout the organ donation process.
  • Maintains hospital donation records in order to document demographics and other pertinent information and performs hospital donation record reviews to assess hospital compliance with regulatory mandates (in coordination with VOT clinical staff as needed); follows up with hospitals on compliance issues.
  • Coordinates, leads, and/or participates in education activities, events, and meetings for hospital administration and staff involved in organ procurement and recovery; develops educational materials as needed.
  • Develops, conducts, and/or participates in community education and awareness programs/meetings for community health care professionals and the public regarding organ donation.
  • Accurately completes all appropriate donation documentation forms in a timely fashion.
  • Participates in the general orientation and training of newly hired OPO personnel.
  • Coordinates and/or participates in various donation-related community activities/events as assigned such as the organ donor awareness month, donor family celebrations, and VOT volunteer recognition events.
  • Contributes to quality assurance activities.
  • Supports and demonstrates a customer service commitment to internal and external customers through adherence to Versiti customer service standards and processes.
  • Maintains competence through attendance at mandatory and other job-related educational opportunities.
  • Actively participates in Lean and continuous improvement activities.
  • Understands how applicable laws, regulations, standards, policies and procedures impact specific job responsibilities and functions and performs assigned job functions in accordance with them to include those set forth by the AOPO (Association of Organ Procurement Organizations).
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university required
  • Equivalent combination of education and related experience (3-5 yrs) may be substituted for the degree with the approval of Human Resources required

Experience

  • 4-6 years Minimum of 3-5 years' relevant experience such as sales, marketing, social services, or professional education required
  • Health care experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A strong customer service focus with effective relationship-building skills required to work in partnership with various levels of hospital staff and community organizations required
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and conflict resolution skills including the ability to communicate and collaborate with others in challenging and stressful situations required
  • Effective organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks at one time while maintaining attention to detail required
  • Flexibility and dedication for handling a demanding, irregular schedule under pressure to meet deadlines required
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment required
  • Effective problem solving and decision-making skills which demonstrate good judgment required
  • Ability to think strategically, and independently develop outreach programs required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; familiarity with database systems required
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License and access to a vehicle required
