Job Summary

The Department of Dermatology is hiring for a Staff Research Associate. Our research program focuses on investigating basic mechanisms skin inflammation and how skin inflammation can lead to joint inflammation. We are looking for an employee to conduct experiments with mouse tissues and mammalian cultured cells. Incumbent upon this research is the ability to perform mouse handling, isolation and culture of primary cells from mice, transfection and/or viral infection of mammalian cells, and analysis of cells by standard assays including immunohistochemistry, qPCR, FACS, western blotting, and basic statistical analysis. In addition, the ordering and maintenance of laboratory supplies and data backup duties will also be required.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Dermatology, School of Medicine, offers a broad range of patient care, teaching, research, and public service responsibilities. The Department provides medical students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows in the School of Medicine, with programs in research, patient care, teaching and public service. The Department is comprised of four distinct clinical sub-units located at the Ambulatory Care Center, San Francisco General Hospital, Mount Zion, Mission Bay and the Veteran's Administration Medical Center and consists of 45 full-time faculty, 40 researchers, 40 staff, 13 residents and 6 clinical fellows.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills. Initiative to work independently and efficiently is expected.
  • Ability to work with diverse team of researchers, scientists, and students .
  • Ability to follow instructions precisely.
  • Ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Effective use of laboratory instruments and their maintenance; knowledge of biomedical and biotechnological techniques and methodologies.
  • Working knowledge in tissue culture and basic cell and molecular biology protocols (including Flow Cytometery, PCR, immunohistochemistry, transfection/infection of cultured cells, recombinant DNA biology).
  • Working knowledge of animal care, including colony management, genotyping, assisting surgery.
  • Strong quantitative skills and basic statistical skills.
  • Some graduate education.
