University of Wisconsin Madison
United States, Wisconsin, Madison
21 North Park Street (Show on map)
Nov 14, 2024
Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Information School seeks highly qualified candidates for a tenured position in information sciences. This faculty position will be an academic nine-month, tenured appointment at the Associate Professor level, to start August 2025. Applications at the Professor level may be considered in exceptional cases.

The successful candidate will advance the educational mission of the College of Letters & Science that values, prioritizes, and actualizes evidence-based and student-centered teaching and (undergraduate student) mentoring. They will contribute to an inclusive, fair, and equitable environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community.

Applications are specifically encouraged in, but not limited to, the following areas:

Health informatics;

Human centered Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning;

Policy analysis or policy-making studies of, data, data governance, AI enabled systems, or other computational information systems.

We are particularly interested in reviewing applications from candidates whose research aligns with one of the following University of Wisconsin RISE initiatives:

RISE-THRIVE will focus on strengthening UW-Madison's investments and leadership in two distinct yet complementary areas: the science of immunology and the study of the healthspan.

Some possible areas of interest relevant to RISE-THRIVE include health informatics, health information sharing in communities, health information seeking, and computational and information technologies in relation to children and/or elderly populations.

RISE-EARTH will focus around two themes. The first is to reimagine economic and environmental systems to, for example, find innovative ways to revitalize communities with new modes of transportation or renew agricultural lands to reduce erosion and enhance biodiversity. The other will be aimed at building sustainable energy and technical systems - for instance, developing new clean energy technologies and ways to capture and store carbon.

Some possible areas of interest relevant to RISE-EARTH would include climate information, libraries and community resilience, and emergency/crisis informatics.

RISE-AI

Over the next three to five years, RISE will accelerate the growth of UW-Madison's network of AI innovators, adding up to 50 new faculty positions at all levels across campus to complement regular hiring. Wisconsin RISE stands to more than double campus investment in AI and related fields than could otherwise have been achieved. New AI-focused faculty will join schools, colleges, centers, institutes and other units across campus.

Some possible areas relevant to RISE-AI would include human-center AI, policy analysis and policy-making around AI, and applied AI.

Responsibilities:

Faculty responsibilities include research and publication, teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses, graduate student advising (both master's and PhD), and service. The successful candidate will conduct scholarly research resulting in publications in high-quality peer-reviewed scholarly venues and design and teach bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level courses. Candidates whose research aligns with one of the RISE initiatives will have the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts with other departments, schools and colleges on the initiative.

The candidate will be committed to service within the department, university, and profession appropriate to faculty rank. The successful candidate, as a member of the College of L&S, will proactively contribute to, support, and advance the college's commitment to equity among all aspects of their teaching, research, and service. It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
