Overview
The National Wildlife Research Center (USDA-NWRC) and the Utah State University (USU) disease ecology lab seek a lab associate to assist with assay development as part of a large-scale chronic wasting disease research program. The position will be filled through USU, but it will be located at the USDA-NWRC in Fort Collins. The Lab Associate will serve as a primary point of contact connecting field, lab, and analytical components of this project. They should be detail-oriented and conscientious of biosecurity. Strong communication and organizational skills are imperative. Applicants will be reviewed on a rolling basis and the position will be filled as quickly as possible.

Responsibilities
The Lab Associate will be responsible for:
  • Coordinating with USU staff to receive and organize a variety of Utah mule deer sample types
  • Working with NWRC staff to perform CWD detection assays and genetic characterization on those specimens
  • Working with NWRC staff to implement, improve, and adapt assay protocols
  • Coordinating data transmission back to USU for statistical analysis.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Four years of experience; or an associate degree plus two years of experience; or a bachelor's degree; or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.
  • Ability to work safely and independently in a BSL-2 laboratory.
  • Experience with laboratory support activities, (e.g. record maintenance, inventory, literature review, document writing, etc.).
  • Experience with data entry and management.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with RT-QuIC
