What You'll Do: As a Construction Observer, you'll be the eyes and ears on our exciting infrastructure projects across Michigan. Your key responsibilities will include:

On-Site Expertise: Interpreting project specifications and working drawings, effectively communicating requirements to contractors to ensure projects are built to plan. -
Quality Assurance: Performing thorough field inspections, coordinating and conducting material testing and sampling, and maintaining equipment. -
Accurate Documentation: Diligently obtaining and recording field data in a clear and organized manner and generating comprehensive field reports. -
Proactive Communication: Maintaining open communication with project staff and all relevant stakeholders, keeping everyone informed of progress and potential issues. -
Financial Oversight: Recording daily construction quantities to facilitate accurate review of contractor payment requests. -
Safety Champion: Understanding and adhering to all public health and safety requirements and ensuring proper safety procedures are followed on site. -
Problem Solving: Collaborating with project staff to address design changes and field challenges. -
Equipment Care: Maintaining assigned vehicles and equipment as needed. -
Flexibility: Performing other duties as assigned to support project success.
What You'll Bring: We're looking for individuals with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality. The ideal candidate will possess one of the following:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering plus 3 years of related construction inspection experience
- Associate's Degree (in a relevant field such as Civil Engineering Technology or Construction Management) plus 5 years of related construction inspection experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in construction inspection
In addition, you'll need:
- Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to relay accurate information effectively.
- A strong commitment to performing all work in a safe and responsible manner, adhering to DLZ's Health and Safety Plan.
- A valid driver's license and the ability to pass an MVR check and drug testing (including marijuana, where permitted by law).
- The ability to occasionally lift up to 50lbs.
- Proven experience with the construction of municipal infrastructure, including water mains, sanitary and storm sewers, sidewalks, ADA ramps, roadways, and other site structures.
- Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- The ability to effectively use mobile devices for communication and record-keeping.
Bonus Points If You Have:
- The ability to travel across Michigan, and potentially throughout the tri-state area.
- Relevant certifications and training in areas such as aggregate, concrete, density, and asphalt testing.
- Familiarity with industry software like AASHTOWare, Field Book, Project Wise, Bluebeam, e-Builder, and Appia.
- OSHA 10-hour or MUST Safety certification.
- MDOT or LAP inspection experience.
- EGLE Construction StormWater Operator (CSWO) Certification and/or Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Plan
- Review and Design Certification.
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Training.
