Organizational Unit Overview
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.
Job Duties
The Office of Clinical Affairs in the School of Dental Medicine at East Carolina University is responsible for ensuring the sustainability of clinical operations. The Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the clinical facilities located in Ross Hall at the School of Dental Medicine. These clinics include: Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, Advanced and Emergency Care, Screening, Special Needs and Comprehensive Dentistry.
The Assistant Dean works in close collaboration with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and the Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices in matters related to clinical protocols, infection control, staffing and quality assurance. The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and is appointed in the appropriate academic department based on training.
Specific duties include:
* Working in conjunction with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Department Chairs and Division Directors to ensure the smooth operation and staffing of clinics at the appropriate times.
* Ensuring successful operational performance including exceptional customer service, quality of care, and standardization of administrative and clinical processes and workflows throughout Ross Hall.
* Directing day-to-day management and operation in the Ross Hall clinics.
* Working with the appropriate individuals to establish and enforce clinic protocols.
* Working with clinic administration to ensure availability and proper scheduling of staff and coverage of all clinics.
* Working with Patient Care Coordinators to ensure patients' needs are being met in a timely fashion.
* Working with Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs monitoring operational and productivity metrics to maximize clinical efficiencies in scheduling and utilization.
* Working with the Quality Assurance coordinator to maintain high standards of care and to develop and implement any corrective action plans as necessary.
* Working with the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs to ensure the adherence to all university and the SoDM human resource and financial policies.
* Providing leadership to inspire and coach employees in successful accomplishment of strategic and operational goals.
* Working closely with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs:

  • To ensure all Ross Hall clinical facilities are functioning and well-maintained and meet local, state, and national standards and regulations,
  • To report equipment malfunctions to the Facilities Manager,
  • To optimize the use of technology to support clinical operations by working closely with the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics and other informatics experts,
  • To ensure patients complaints are addressed appropriately,
  • To assist in budget planning for clinical affairs and assuring that staffing, equipment and funding are appropriate for the mission requirements,
  • To monitor the Ross Hall operating budget to ensure sustainability of clinical operations,
  • To represent the office of Clinical Affairs at meetings of the School of Dental Medicine, appropriate campus and hospital meetings and other meetings,
  • To ensure CODA standards are met,
  • To assist in preparing for Medical Response Training, OSHA and safety standards, and
  • To oversee all the clinical ancillary and support services


* Providing clinical supervision for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral students
* Participating in Faculty Practice (optional)
* Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs or the Dean.
* Fixed term or tenure track position is available at the title/rank of Assistant Professor or higher.

*Contingent upon available funding.

This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System ( TSERS). Minimum Education/Experience
Required Qualifications
* DDS or DMD (or equivalent) from an appropriately accredited dental school
* 5 years clinical dentistry experience
* At least 3 years of experience in a managerial position, such as a director or associate director of clinics, in an accredited dental school or large (15+ operatory) dental practice
* Outstanding interpersonal skills
* Eligibility for immediate dental licensure by the State of North Carolina
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
* DDS or DMD (or equivalent) from an appropriately accredited dental school
* Eligibility for immediate dental licensure by the State of North Carolina
