Organizational Unit Overview
The PM&R Department serves the rehabilitation needs of the 1.3 million people in a 29-county region of eastern North Carolina and is located within Vidant Rehabilitation Center at Vidant Medical Center, with Spinal Cord, Brain Injury, General Rehab, and Pediatric Rehabilitation Units.
The Center's 57-bed inpatient unit is one of few rehabilitation facilities in the U.S. accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities ( CARF) in eleven or more specialty areas. The Center is also one of the five centers of excellence at Vidant. Vidant Medical Center is a JCAHO-accredited Level I Trauma center with 974 beds and is one of seven hospitals owned by Vidant Health.
The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center (formerly Pitt County Memorial Hospital). Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
Job Duties
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at East Carolina University is seeking a qualified Physiatrist with Graduate Medical Education leadership experience to lead our residency program. The applicant will also perform patient care duties on a CARF-accredited Rehab Inpatient Specialty Unit and/or in the ECU/Vidant Outpatient Clinic setting. Successful applicants must have the following qualifications: The Program Director will help establish the strategic direction of the program and will be responsible for maintaining the standards, quality and reputation of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program. Key Responsibilities for the Program Director:

  • Prepare and implement a comprehensive, effective, and well-organized educational curriculum
  • Oversee and ensure the administration of high quality didactic and clinical education * Facilitation and management of external training and educational experiences
  • Selection and management of program faculty with development and educational oversight, particularly focused on scholarly activity
  • Lead the annual recruitment and selection of program candidates through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)
  • Ensure compliance with both the Institutional and ACGME stated requirements and expectations
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures consistent with the institutional and program requirements (e.g., resident clinical and educational work hours, clinical work environment, etc.)
  • Participation in regular evaluation of the program's residents and faculty in relation to the educational objectives of the program and the ACGME's milestones for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • Assess the technical competence and clinical capabilities of each resident
  • Be well-versed on all residency educational requirements both internal and external to include residency training milestones.


Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program ( ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b. 457). Minimum Education/Experience
Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from an appropriately accredited institution.
Board certified in PM&R
Extensive successful experience in clinical or professional practice in an area of specialization, or in a subdivision of the specialty area, and in working with and/or directing others (such as professionals, faculty members, residents/students, etc.) in clinical activities in the field
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • At least three years of documented specialty expertise
  • At least three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience from another ACGME accredited residency/fellowship program.
  • Documented scholarly activity/participation, within the past five years, in at least one of the following areas listed below:

    1. Publication of original research or review articles in peer-reviewed journals, or chapters in textbooks,
    2. Publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at local, regional, or national professional and scientific society meetings; or
    3. Participation in national committees or educational organizations
