Asst Professor - Sensory Biology/Zoology & Physiology

The University of Wyoming invites diverse applicants to consider our employment opportunities. We are also especially interested in candidates who have experience working with diverse populations and/or diverse initiatives.

JOB TITLE:

Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Sensory Biology

JOB PURPOSE:

The Department of Zoology and Physiology at the University of Wyoming invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Sensory Biology at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek an outstanding scientist who conducts mechanistic studies to address fundamental or translational questions in the sensory systems. Research interests may include, but are not limited to, cellular, molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying sensory perception, sensory processing, and related neural circuits, as well as how these systems change with aging, disease, or environmental factors. Candidates with expertise in a variety of model organisms and sensory modalities (e.g. interoception) will be considered. We are particularly interested in applicants who employ cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary and integrative laboratory research to investigate sensory biology in mammals or zebrafish models.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The candidate will be expected to develop a strong, extramurally funded research program to understand the biology of a Sensory System. The candidate is expected to be part of the interdisciplinary research team associated with the federally funded Wyoming Sensory Biology Center (WSBC) of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE). The WSBC is a multi-disciplinary center that brings together investigators from multiple colleges (CALSNR, Health Sciences; and Engineering and Physical Sciences) with expertise in diverse areas of Sensory Biology and experimental methodology and fosters interdisciplinary collaborations to address key issues in sensory system function and dysfunction, including aging. The candidate is expected to take advantage of and strengthen the Integrated Microscopy Core facility and the NIH funded Wyoming IDeA Networks for Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) Data Science Core. The candidate is expected to contribute to the teaching missions of the Physiology and Biology degrees and interdisciplinary graduate education through the development of new undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses that align with the candidate's area of expertise.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

The candidate will be required to participate in appropriate service activities including, but not limited to, serving on departmental, college and university committees, graduate committees, search committees, among others. These service functions are in addition to discipline-related service activities at the national and international levels.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Excellent written, oral communication and formal presentation skills.
  • High potential for an extramurally funded research program, and visional leadership.
  • Demonstrated capacity for effective teamwork and collaboration.
  • Demonstrated capacity to utilize vertebrate animal models in research of biology of a sensory system.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Multiple publications as a main contributing author in the field of Sensory Biology in peer-reviewed scientific literature, including original research published in high impact journals.
  • Demonstrated history of quality of work and innovation
  • Evidence of competency in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • Demonstrated capacity to utilize vertebrate animal models in research of biology of a sensory system.
  • Evidence of competency in running a multidisciplinary biomedical research team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to training students.
