Job Description

The Director of Residence Life provides the vision, management, and direction for the department of residence life at Augsburg University. Provides leadership to develop and implement programs and operations that enhance the student experience for 1,000 students living on campus. Provides leadership and has accountability for meeting occupancy goals and linking residence life with student retention. Works collaboratively with other departments across campus to improve the student experience and occupancy in the residence halls through programming, safety initiatives, facilities maintenance, and recruitment of incoming and returning students. Active participant in the Division of Student Experience and Success and in other campus leadership groups and committees.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversees programming and daily operations that provide an engaged, student success focused experience for all students, both residential and commuter.
  • Responsible for meeting University goals related to residence hall occupancy and auxiliary revenue, including partnering with the Admissions Office to bring incoming students to residence life.
  • Establishes accurate occupancy, revenue reports and budget analysis.
  • Aligns Residence Life operations and programming to enhance student retention and success, as well as partners with other offices to ensure the institution meets retention goals.
  • Oversees the management of all room assignment-related tasks for new and returning students, mid-year room change requests, and communications to internal and external stakeholders regarding room assignments on campus.
  • Engages in short- and long-range planning around effective and efficient residence life operations.
  • Supervises residence life staff.
  • Oversees residence life engagement with students around concerns and challenges, including working closely with other campus partners to make referrals as needed.
  • Consults with the department of public safety, department of facilities, and dining services to address safety, facility, and meal plan issues.
  • Manages communication with students and parents regarding concerns around the residential student experience.
  • Oversees, evaluates, and assesses the residential facilities with the department of facilities, including communicating regularly with the Director of Facilities and the Custodial Supervisor to monitor residence hall maintenance, housing facilities issues and improvements, and housekeeping needs.
  • Manages assessment efforts around residential student learning and student satisfaction with the residential student experience.
  • Oversees, edits, and publishes the Residence Life Handbook
  • All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor



Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in Residence Life
  • Experience supervising professional-level staff
  • Experience working with a diverse university-level student body


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in student affairs, education, social work, counseling, or related field
  • Direct experience with student conduct hearings and Title IX investigations
  • Experience managing departmental budgets
  • Experience collaborating with a wide variety of departments across campus


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of student and/or human development theory and its application
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and work independently with little supervision
  • Ability to show initiative, organize workflow, manage one or more projects, and handle frequent interruptions
  • Excellent communication skills


Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Work is often during weekdays, but can include some weekday evenings and weekends, including in emergency on-call situations
  • Typical work environment is an office, working at a desk for long periods of time
  • Regular computer use
