Job Information

The Wallace H. Coulter Foundation Endowed Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at FIU invites applications for a Tenured/Tenure-Track Associate or Full Professor to begin as early as August 2024. We are seeking highly qualified individuals with expertise and a proven research track record in invasive electrophysiological techniques to study brain circuits in mammals, with preferences in primates. The ideal individuals will augment the department's current strengths and fortify collaborative ties with other colleges within FIU and with the Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute (MNI).

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering or a related science or engineering field. Qualified applicants are expected to have demonstrated academic research excellence as demonstrated by extensive publication records and external funding. Preference will be given to applicants with transferable resources. Applicants with experience in invasive electrophysiological recording from the human brain and/or brain organoid platforms are preferred in order to bridge BME expertise with neurosurgeons/neurologists at the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) and the MNI. The new faculty hire will be expected to develop and sustain an inclusive high-quality collaborative research program. Candidates must also have a commitment to teaching excellence at both the graduate and the undergraduate levels and be qualified to develop and teach courses in neural engineering.

The department of Biomedical Engineering at FIU was established in 2003 with a $10M endowment from the Wallace Coulter Foundation. This endowment provides significant support for undergraduate and graduate students, seminar/symposia, as well as a recurrent SEED funding for its faculty. Research activities in the BME department are also funded by a variety of sources, including federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and foundational grants. Over the last five years, research awards have exceeded $30M in the department, which includes several R01s, an NSF CAREER and two NSF funded Engineering Research Centers. In addition, several faculty members are actively involved in translational research, which is further supported by industry partnerships and philanthropic contributions. The department offers BS (ABET accredited), MS, BS/MS, and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering. It has over 380 undergraduate and more than 80 graduate students (49 fully funded PhD students and 36 self-supported MS students). BME faculty are actively engaged in joint curriculum development and collaborative research with the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Miami, hosting a range of major medical institutions alongside the Veterans Affairs Health Care System, presents abundant opportunities for research collaborations for biomedical engineering faculty, fostering a rich environment for multidisciplinary partnerships and innovative developments. For more information about the Department, please visit our website at http://www.bme.fiu.edu/.
