Summary

Performs with latitude for independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative, Diagnostic Ultrasound exams and invasive procedures of designated anatomy to physician specifications and established protocols. May participate in call rotations, as necessary.

Job Duties

  • Performs all diagnostic ultrasound procedures using appropriate patient protocols, positioning, technique selection, equipment, and supplies.
  • Identifies patient and provides instruction and guidance in regards to ultrasound procedures.
  • Reviews and confirms provider orders, provides technical support and consults with the radiologist.
  • Delivers high quality scans and communications to the radiologist.
  • Produces images of optimal quality using sound judgement and deviates from normal techniques to optimally visualize the principle area of interest.
  • Scans documentation and handles patients with a high degree of professional ethics, care, tact, courtesy, patience, and safety.
  • Strives to reduce defects, errors, and reworks through a preventative planning process.
  • Assists in the instruction of new employees and ancillary departments.
  • Assumes responsibility for cleanliness and sanitation of the immediate work area.
  • Maintains responsibility for the proper and efficient operation of all equipment used and escalates and reports malfunctions and the need for adjustment and/or repair to the appropriate authority.
  • Attends department and hospital meetings and participates in hospital safety program.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Specialized Diploma Graduate of approved CAHEA school of diagnostic medical sonography or certification program. In good standing with the ARDMS.
  • 1 year clinical experience in ultrasound
  • 1 year abdominal, GYN, peripheral vascular doppler experience
  • Ability to deal effectively and ethically with medical and confidential information relating to patients, families, physicians, and nursing personnel.
  • Ability to function independently and competently.
  • Ability to maintain professional relationship with co-workers and medical staff.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of personnel such as patients, family, physicians, nurses, and students.
  • Knowledge necessary to ensure that the assessment, treatment, and care are appropriate to the age of patients served ranging in age from neonates to geriatrics.
  • RDMS - Reg Diagnostic Medical Sonographer ARDMS - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support - State of Pennsylvania within 30 Days

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree Diagnostic Medical Sonography or
  • Bachelor's Degree Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • RVT - Registered Vascular Technologist ARDMS - State of Pennsylvania

Physical Demands

Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
