Position Purpose


The Supervisor of Clinical Engineering Specialists is responsible for planning and supervising the activities of Clinical Engineering personnel, monitoring their work, and taking corrective actions when necessary.

The Responsibilities of the position are divided into two major categories: the supervision of Clinical Engineering operations; and the supervision of Clinical Engineering personnel. The Supervisor of Clinical Engineering Specialists is also expected to have the skills and understanding needed to maintain a highly engaged team of employees and have documented experience servicing highly complex, specialist imaging equipment (CT, MRI etc.)



Nature and Scope


Operations Supervision:

a- Oversee activities related to providing services (e.g., scheduled and unscheduled work, customer satisfaction).

a- Coordinate activities of service providers and vendors concerned with installation and/or service of medical equipment.

a- Review department activity reports and other performance data to measure productivity and goal achievement and to determine areas needing cost reduction and program improvement.

a- Provide input in the development of Departmental and/or team policies and procedures, goals, and objectives.

a- Supervise day-to-day departmental activities to ensure compliance with policies and procedures, goals, and objectives (e.g., prepare work schedule, assign specific duties).

a- Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements as applicable (e.g., TJC, ANSI, AAMI, NFPA, OSHA, CAP, AABB, CMS, FDA, FCC, HIPAA, DNV, AOA, ACR, IAC, IEC, NRC, DOH, NEC, CLIA, COLA, MQSA).

a- Assist in reporting departmental operations performance to other departments or committees in accordance with the Medical Equipment Management Plan (e.g., environment of care, patient safety, risk management, benchmarking).

a- Participate in/lead departmental meetings and communications.

a- Ensure resources are available to complete departmental team activities (e.g., tools, test equipment, supplies, technical information, and training).

a- Meet with department heads, managers, supervisors, vendors, and others to solicit cooperation and resolve problems.

a- Collaborate with other stakeholders (e.g., IT, nursing, vendors) to manage device integration.

a- Collaborate with other departments on utility maintenance and interruption (e.g., network, telecom, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems, change management, downtime procedures).

a- Support a complete, accurate and reliable medical equipment inventory by ensuring Clinical Engineering personnel follow all applicable data integrity policies/procedures/standards. Ensure competency of Clinical Engineering department personnel and outside service vendors.

Employee Supervision:

a- Supervise Clinical Engineering personnel duties (e.g., staffing, conflict management, disciplinary procedures, and performance development plan).

a- Ensure department and/or team practices are in compliance with state and federal labor laws (e.g., ADA, EEOC, FMLA, and NLRA).

a- Participate in the recruitment, selection, retention, and termination of employees.

a- Conduct performance evaluations of Clinical Engineering department personnel.

Risk Management:

a- Evaluate key risks associated with the use of medical equipment (e.g., patient safety, operations, finance, emergency preparedness).

a- Assure integrity of data collection, storage, and security associated with healthcare technology (e.g., HIPAA, EKG management, EMR).

a- Recommend processes, procedures, or policies to control or reduce risk.

a- Participate in incident investigations. Produce reports that outline findings, explain risk

positions, or recommend changes (e.g., SMDA, sentinel event alerts).

a- Ensure recalls, hazards, and safety advisories related to healthcare technology are resolved in an appropriate manner.

Education & Training:

a- Evaluate the effectiveness of Clinical Engineering personnel training programs.

a- Conduct orientation sessions and on-the-job training for personnel.

a- Assure availability of training manuals (e.g., service manuals, operator manuals, training

media, and other educational materials).

a- Collaborate with clinical departments on medical equipment related training (e.g., MRI and radiation safety, equipment use, use-error trending).

a- Collaborate with non-clinical departments on healthcare technology training (e.g., infection prevention, environmental services, and supply chain).

Financial Management:

a- Provide input during financial planning, budgeting, and procurement activities for the Clinical Engineering department (e.g., capital planning, technology planning, reporting, billing, payroll, and budgeting).

a- Review sourcing options for parts, service, training, and test equipment/tools.

Medical Equipment Service:

a- Perform service activities on medical equipment as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements - Required and/or Preferred



Name Description

Education:



Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. Requires Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, biomedical technology, electronics engineering technology, related healthcare discipline, information technology or business.



Experience:



Seven years of experience in biomedical/clinical engineering of which at least five years must be related to diagnostic imaging equipment, including at least one of the following modalities: MRI, CT, X-Ray, Ultrasound and Nuclear Medicine. Three years of leadership experience preferred.



License(s):



Valid State of Nevada or California Driver's license and ability to pass Renown Health's Department of Motor Vehicle Report criteria.



Certification(s):



CBET or CRES certification preferred.



Computer / Typing:



Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
