JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Electrical Power and Control Systems (EPCS) Department within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking motivated and talented Vehicle Power Electronic Engineers to join our teams. You will take part with multidisciplinary engineering teams in the development of cutting edge power electronics, including hardware/firmware and power dense energy storage, in order to support high performance undersea vehicles and other applications for Department of Defense and related efforts.

You Will:

  • Drive the full life cycle design and development process to identify competitive, efficient and elegant power electronic designs

  • Participate in system requirements identification, flow-down, and functional allocation

  • Execute detailed design stages including early design and development processes (market surveys, analysis of alternatives, interface control documents, functional design documents, hardware/firmware design documents and test plans/reports) followed by design reviews and resulting in design acceptance with deliverable documentation packages

  • Capture approved hardware designs in printed wiring board layouts using state of the art CAD tools and then demonstrate the design satisfies the identified requirements and expectations during large scale system integration exercises and requirement verification stages

  • Use integrated development environments to capture related firmware as part of the design and to aid in hardware test procedure development

  • Test and qualify the hardware/firmware design by applying advanced hardware-in-the-loop test methods to support integration with larger systems of systems

  • Support test cell and field testing of prototype systems to demonstrate final design

This position can be filled at multiple levels, depending upon your education and experience. Typical requirements include a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline, Master's Degree preferred; 5+ years related experience for the advanced professional level. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.

Additional Responsibilities for a higher level position includes:

  • Serve as a technical leader on multiple projects

  • Manage multiple and/or large projects

  • Create opportunities to enhance technical methodology

  • Mentor and train assigned employees in the development of technical, project and business development skills

Required Skills:

  • Design experience in analog, digital, power, and battery systems

  • Knowledge and use of CAD tools for schematic capture, layout, and generating procurement documentation

  • Expertise in both low-voltage and high-voltage systems as well as battery systems involving Lithium-based battery technologies

  • Demonstrated ability to work within or lead a technical team

  • Be hands-on, exhibit a solid understanding of electronics concepts, and possess a proven ability to build, troubleshoot, and integrate hardware/firmware with larger, more complex systems

Preferred Skills:

  • Altium Design Suite

  • Embedded C/C++ and VHDL/Verilog firmware languages

Your working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA.

This position will require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$109,300.00 - $191,000.00
