Brief Summary of Work for this Position
Nature and Scope of Work
The Grants Officer I will primarily support Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance ( SPARC) with administrative tasks related to grant management and compliance, such as generating grant documents, creation of required grant reports, and file maintenance. This includes maintaining non-financial and financial records of grants submitted, grants under management, and reporting deadlines.
The Grants Officer I is a part-time, temporary position (up to 30 hours per week maximum) and will have a flexible schedule depending on demand. Position may be considered for telework or telecommuting at SPARCs discretion, consistent with System Office policy.
The job requires well-developed written and verbal communications skills to exchange technical and complex information. Work results impact the accuracy, reliability and acceptability of data used in SPARCs sponsored programs management efforts. Work involves managing multiple priorities and planning and organizing to meet established deadlines. Responsible for journey-level work output on an independent basis subject to supervisory direction and review.

Job Duties May Include:
1. Interprets policies, rules, or regulations; provides guidance to staff and the community regarding grant administration, compliance, policies, and procedures; and resolves related issues and concerns.
2. Maintains files and records and prepares reports related to grants issued and or received
3. Develops, implements, and monitors the SPARC website.
4. Performs a variety of research administrative support activities to ensure proposal and or award requirements are met in a timely manner
5. Ensures grantees' compliance with conditions of grants by monitoring and analyzing agreements, contracts, expenses, activities, and federal and state regulations
6. Analyzes project costs and prepares budget revisions for awarded grants
7. Coordinates the work of other office support staff assisting with grant related projects
8. Performs special projects and other related duties as assigned

Work Environment
Work is performed in a standard office environment, but remote work may be an option as consistent with the UNC Systems Office guidelines. Exposure to video display terminals ( TEAMS and ZOOM) occurs on a regular basis. Tight timelines, workflow disturbances, extended hours and irregularities in the work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Associate degree or two years of college level course work in research administration, business administration or communications, finance, or related area.
  • Experience performing the duties described above may substitute for the degree requirement or college level coursework on a year for year basis.
  • Two years of related experience preferably in the area of grants and contracts development/management, budgeting and accountability processes, fundraising, business administration, or public affairs.
  • Must be proficient using Microsoft Office Suite, spreadsheet, word processing, database and presentation software and must have experience integrating software applications to produce complex documents. Demonstrated experience in HTML coding and/or web specific software is preferred.
  • Must have knowledge of techniques used for online database research.
  • Must have the ability to learn and apply knowledge of all pertinent federal, state and local regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Must have organizational abilities, with close attention to detail and precision,
  • Must be approachable, excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to work well independently and with a team
  • Excellent time management skills with a results-oriented focus, and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and deadlines concurrently
  • Professional demeanor, dependability, integrity, and good judgement

Temporary assignments cannot exceed 11 consecutive months without a full 31-day break from employment.
