Philosophy and Structure

The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) performs the cleaning, inspection, disinfection and sterilization of medical devices that are used for surgical procedures. The SPD team are comprised of highly-trained and skilled technicians functioning in several different capacities throughout the department to ensure patients receive the highest quality of surgical devices in time for their procedures.

Orientation and Training

We provide all new SPD staff with a robust onboarding process. Orientation includes computer- based learning, one-on-one time with leadership, and hands-on orientation with skilled preceptors in each area of the department. Our orientees are followed closely during orientation while tailoring their orientation needs based on previous experience and learning styles.

Within Sterile Processing's ever-changing environment, we rely on experienced and knowledgeable technicians to advance in specialist roles inside and outside of the department. Support Technicians, as well as other internal and external candidates have opportunities to apply to our Sterile Processing Internship programs which are offered at each campus a few times per year. In addition, Instrument and Sterile Core Technicians with a few years of experience and the necessary qualifications, may also have opportunities to advance into roles within the Quality & Education and Infection Prevention environments.

For current technicians, Northside also offers the RISE program, which allows technicians to confirm their level of expertise based on actions and years of experience.

This position is responsible for implementing the department's Continuous Improvement program on one or more shifts. Areas of emphasis include, but are not limited to: delivery of technical training to instrument techs, performance and documentation of quality assurance audits, TJC and AAMI compliance, orientation of newly hired instrument techs, promoting certification activities throughout the department, and supporting process improvement initiatives.

REQUIRED

  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Five (5) years sterile processing or related field experience with demonstrated knowledge of instrument sterilization techniques, Sterile Processing policies and procedures, purchasing activities, and surgical procedures.
  3. Demonstrated ability to set priorities with evidence of completion.
  4. CRCST or CSPDT certification.

PREFERRED

  1. Two (2) year or greater college degree
  2. One (1) year or more Sterile Processing or related field supervisory experience.
  3. One (1) year or more experience in training and/or education.
