Job Summary

A Middle School Volleyball Official is responsible for enforcing the sports rules, ensuring that all games start on time, and providing a safe and positive environment for participants (grades 6th - 8th). Applicant must be a WIAA certified official. Applicant must be available Fridays (Evenings) and/or Saturdays. Hours are dependent on team registrations.

Position Summary

  • Administer Middle School Volleyball rules, policies, and regulations.
  • A strong knowledge for rules and policies pertaining to Volleyball.
  • Report for duty as assigned at least 15 minutes prior to the start of your assignment.
  • Consult with the Youth Sports Supervisor and/or the site Building Director to cancel scheduled games when facility conditions do not permit safe play.
  • Ensure that games are being kept on time (Time limit specifications are listed in the rules provided by the Youth Sports Office).
  • Possess a high level of independent judgement and the ability to make on the spot decisions.
  • Professionalism in demeanor, attitude, and dress along with appropriate officiating items in possession (i.e. whistle)
  • Model positive language and behavior.
  • Dress in designated uniform (Uniform specifications will be provided by the Youth Sports Office).
  • Reports any special incidents to the Youth Sports Supervisor.
  • Effectively communicate with other Milwaukee Recreation staff, patrons, coaches, and participants regarding Volleyball rules upon request.
  • Follows, administers, and implements all Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Recreation policies and rules.
  • Understand and abide by all policies and procedures outlined in the Part-Time Employee Manual.
  • Have the physical ability to set up/break down sites as needed.
  • Contact the Youth Sports Supervisor to confirm or decline all scheduled assignments that have been sent.
  • Attend any mandatory Middle School Volleyball Officials trainings.
  • Maintain a safe and organized environment.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned.
Supervision Required

Works in partnership with the Building Director at their assigned work site, and under the direction of the Youth Sports Supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • General knowledge of Volleyball rules and regulations.
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs required for this position.
  • Behave and appear in fair, consistent, and professional manner.
  • WIAA Certified Official in Volleyball.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • 1st Aid/CPR/AED Certifications (training will be provided if needed).
  • Ability to attend all MANDATORY applicable in-service trainings.

  • Advanced knowledge of Volleyball rules and regulations.
  • Patience in dealing with stressful situations.
  • Must be a team player with a positive, service-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with participants, officials, coaches, patrons, community members, stadium staff, and support staff.
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships with coworkers and part-time Milwaukee Recreation staff.
  • Ability to participate interactively with a diverse group of youth.
Working Environment

This environment includes walking, climbing, standing for long periods of time, and possible loud noises when exposed to activities in the gym or similar environment. Staff will be required to supervise groups of children and adults as well as assist in the accommodation of children and/or adults with disabilities (within parameters of provided training).
