Building/League Director (Youth Sports)

Job Summary

Youth Sports Building/League Directors (Grades 1st - 8th) are responsible for managing the day-to-day program operations of their assigned Youth Sports league site. Prior knowledge of the assigned sport is desired, but not required. Applicants must be available Saturdays, with some weekday opportunities. Hours are dependent on team registrations.

The Youth Sports Office is currently looking for Building/League Directors for the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons. Building/League Director training will be provided.

Position Summary

  • Effectively communicate with school engineers, principals, sports coordinators, part-time building staff, and patrons regarding Youth Sports league updates/issues.
  • Complete paperwork correctly and punctually. This includes attendance sheets, daily reports, incident/ accident forms, Muni Cards, and score sheets. Submit paperwork weekly to Youth Sports Supervisor.
  • Promote positive language and behavior by setting a good example.
  • Develop healthy relationships with the participants, coaches, spectators, community members, and part-staff.
  • Effectively communicate with patrons regarding game cancellations, game rules, league policies, and eligibility guidelines.
  • Supervise program staff and officials assigned to your site.
  • Be professional in the workplace, including dress, always.
  • Distribute schedules, picture information, certificates, special events, and trophies as needed.
  • Assist with the staging of pre-game and post-game activities.
  • Maintain all aspects of the site including on-site emergencies, problems/complaints, and cleanliness of all program areas at the league site location.
  • Follows, administers, and implements all Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Recreation policies and rules.
  • Understand and abide by all policies and procedures outlined in the Part-Time Employee Manual.
  • Have the physical ability to set up/break down sites as needed.
  • Attend any mandatory Scorekeeper trainings.
  • Maintain a safe and organized environment.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned.
Supervision Required

  • Works under the direction of the Youth Sports Supervisor.
Job Requirements

  • Good communication skills with participants and parents.
  • A good working knowledge of the MPS Recreation Youth Sports procedures, policies, programs, and services.
  • Ability to identify and de-escalate a hostile/volatile situation.
  • Ability to work well with co-workers and support staff able to delegate job duties as needed.
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs required for this position.
  • Behave and appear in fair, consistent, and professional manner.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • 1st Aid/CPR/AED Certifications (training will be provided if needed).
  • Ability to attend all MANDATORY applicable in-service trainings.

Preferred Experience

  • 3-5 years of progressive experience supervising teens, and adults.
  • 3-5 years of experience managing a program or service operation.
  • Preferred experience working with large groups independently.
  • Pursuing an education or recreation degree is preferred.
  • Previous work experience in a public setting with a diverse population.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Fast learner.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain files, assemble reports, and perform multiple office functions.
  • Ability to deliver exemplary customer service to the public and district staff.
  • Patience in dealing with stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of assigned sport.
  • Must be a team player with a positive, service-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with participants, officials, coaches, patrons, community members, other staff, and support staff.
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships with coworkers and part-time Milwaukee Recreation staff.
  • Ability to participate interactively with a diverse group of youth.
  • Excellent decision-making skills and ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
Working Environment

This environment includes walking, climbing, standing for long periods of time, and possible loud noises when exposed to activities in the gym or similar environment. Staff will be required to supervise groups of children and adults as well as assist in the accommodation of children and/or adults with disabilities (within parameters of provided training).
