Job Description Summary

The Assistant Director for Fitness increases the participation and diversification of fitness programs and participants including, but not limited to group fitness classes, personal and small group training, custom fitness programs and special events. Oversees all full-time, part-time and student fitness employees. Coordinates evaluation and assessment of fitness programs, equipment and staff. Collaborates with Campus Life partners to promote student engagement and foster physical wellbeing by all members of the campus community.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Provides leadership and administrative duties to ensure successful operation of a comprehensive and diverse fitness program. Increases and diversifies program offerings and participants.
  • Oversees group exercise, personal and small group training, and custom fitness programs and special events.
  • Supervises the Fitness Coordinator and part-time group exercise and personal training staff.
  • Develops annual goals with appropriate evaluation and assessment metrics to demonstrate progress in areas of responsibility.
  • Designs and implements a comprehensive group fitness program comprising both standardized classes (i.e., Les Mills) and instructor customized classes.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive staff development program for fitness employees.
  • Collaborates with Campus Life partners and student groups to provide custom fitness programs and special event programming, particularly to target and engage members of the campus population that are under participating.
  • Responsible for risk management of fitness programs, equipment, and staff. Recommends and develops policies and procedures for fitness programs that promote safety, fiscal responsibility, and participation.
  • Manages fitness budgets and provides accountability for expenditures. Meets or exceeds fitness program annual net profit goals.
  • Manages assessment and reporting of participation numbers, learning outcomes, and satisfaction for fitness programs.
  • Ensures the development and implementation of robust marketing for fitness offerings.
  • Fosters an inclusive environment that is welcoming of all members of the campus community, especially under-represented populations.
  • Coordinates and/or assists with other special projects as may be assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 3 years full-time fitness experience.
  • Appropriate professional certifications through ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NCSA or similar.
  • Experience supervising fitness employees.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering fitness programs preferably on a college campus.
  • Experience with and knowledge of group fitness and small and personal group training.
  • Knowledge of cardio, weight, and fitness equipment.
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid or ability to obtain certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of risk management, assessment, marketing, and budgeting.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholder groups - students, faculty, staff, retirees, parents, etc.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Master's degree.
  • Extensive experience on a college campus and/or with college-age clients.
  • Knowledge of fitness technology such as virtual fitness, remote streaming capabilities, etc.

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for own work. Works both independently and collaboratively.
  • Supervises full-time, part-time, and student fitness employees including group fitness class instructors and personal/small group trainers.
  • Responsible for an operating budget of approximately $150,000.
