In this role you will provide administrative and clinical support to the clinic Mohs technicians, faculty, resident, fellows, and medical staff in the Dermatology practices including Westwood, Santa Monica and community sites. Major functions include: Mohs technician scheduling, initial and annual competency validation, CDPH and CMS licensure filing and maintenance, development and training of existing and new hires, development of training modules and competencies and keeping current with new techniques.

Under the supervision of the Dermatology Director and Mohs Surgical Director, you will need to have a minimum completion of 6-month intensive training (apprenticeship) program solely focused on the unique methods of the Mohs laboratory frozen tissue process which includes: grossing and mapping, freezing, embedding and cutting horizontal sections to obtain 100% tissue margin control, use of special stains to highlight skin cancer cells-including immunohistochemistry on frozen sections for melanoma. Supervisor Mohs tech should have a minimum of 1-2 years experience. Preparation and mixing of solutions, labeling and storage of slides, use and handling of all materials and reagents, proper disposal of stains and cleaning of glass containers, ensuring a safe environment in the lab according to OSHA and JCAHO standards, maintenance of fume hood filters. Mohs laboratory frozen tissue process for patienttreatments, ensuring labs are compliant, and assisting with surgical set-up.

Maintains workload, quality control and other regulatory logs as needed. Interacts with faculty, residents and clinical staff to resolve issues regarding worklists and other orders. Works overtime, holidays, weekends, and on-call as needed . Maintains a clean and properly maintained work area. Works independently and contributes to the overall goal of a collaborative team. Adheres to all UCLA Health system and university policies, procedures, and safety regulations. Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Salary Range: $68,800 - $141,000/annually

Qualifications

Required:



  • Mohs Technician Certificate or equivalent training
  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or related field and/or combination of education and experience.
  • BLS for health care providers from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • 1 + year lead Mohs Tissue Technician laboratory experience
  • Skills to supervise support staff in clinic / center administration, and to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Knowledge of CLIA laboratory protocol
  • Knowledge of methods for operating laboratory equipment
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety standards
  • Knowledge of CAP and JCAHO standards
  • Ability to be punctual and maintain a satisfactory attendance record.
  • Knowledge of infection control, ergonomic, chemical waste, and glove fit regulations and all other General Safety procedures.
  • Skills in accurate computer data entry in laboratory information systems.
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with peers, staff and faculty
  • Ability to maintain all block logs
  • Ability to print grossing sheets and labels for slides
  • Perform routine staining procedures including but not limited to operating and maintaining slide staining.
  • Embed and cut tissue and place on the slide for staining.
  • Stain and cover slip slides for physician review.
  • Prepare for Mohs surgery by setting up cryostat, staining station, surgical trays, and supplies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language through written and oral communication.
  • Ability to recognize the needs of own area of responsibility as well as the laboratory as a whole.
  • Manual dexterity to perform technical duties/tasks.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work with frequents interruptions.
  • Ability to travel to and be physically present at various community clinic locations throughout Southern California
  • Ability to work various days/shifts; days and hours may vary depending on assignments.
