Job Summary:



Nature of Work

The Director of Strategic Philanthropic Initiatives (or Development Strategist for Faculty Relations) will serve as a critical member of the CU Anschutz advancement team. In this role they will work closely with faculty and leaders on ideas and opportunities to elevate the campus, train the next generation of the healthcare workforce, bring resources to bear to transform research and elevate the reputation and success of CU Anschutz. In this role, the Director of Strategic Philanthropic Initiatives (or Development Strategist for Faculty Relations) daily work will involve meeting with faculty and staff to understand philanthropic opportunities, co-create and articulate complex scientific concepts for lay audiences, manage expectations and train partners on best practice, and assist externally-facing gift officers by providing materials for benefactor conversations.

Supervision Received: Reports to the Senior Director of Development

Supervision Exercised: No direct reports.

Essential Duties

Faculty Relations- 40%



  • Serves as primary point of contact between unit leaders and the CU Anschutz Advancement team, reporting directly to the Executive Director of Faculty and Hospital Relations.
  • Works to cultivate strong partnerships with unit leaders and their faculty members to understand and co-create philanthropic opportunities that align with organizational needs and priorities.
  • Facilitates productive relationships between faculty and donors through relationships with Philanthropic Advisors.
  • Maintains a portfolio of faculty members, guiding them with philanthropy by writing sample communications and preparing strategy for current and potential benefactors.


Philanthropic Advisor- 40%



  • Creates a strategic approach to program funding and growth, with an emphasis on cross campus collaborations.
  • Provides strategic advice and direction for inter-professional fundraising activities related to campus priorities
  • Implements proven key strategies with campus leaders and faculty to build, manage and monitor referrals of health alumni, community members and/or grateful patients toward funding priorities.
  • Works closely with CU Anschutz Medical Campus philanthropic advisors, communications professionals, benefactor relations staff and appropriate Central Office staff (i.e.: Gifting Planning, Annual Giving, etc.) to develop and implement fundraising strategies in order to meet established goals and objectives.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of the CU Anschutz fundraising process, including proposal development, gift agreements, fund allocation management and stewardship.
  • Represents the University at events in order to support the University, build deeper relationships with leaders and faculty and cultivate donors.


Content Development and Dissemination- 20%



  • Develops and maintains a deep understanding of institutional priorities, academic programs, and centers of excellence in order to translate these assets into compelling funding opportunities. Disseminates information to external advancement team.
  • Works to ensure timely, accurate completion of key visits, communication and internal team requests.
  • Works internally to develop clear visions and philanthropic cases for support with faculty



Work Location:



Hybrid - The office expectation is a hybrid schedule of 1-3 days per week on campus, as needed. The frequency of on campus work can be discussed as part of a final offer.



  • This position requires periodic flexibility in hours, including evenings and the occasional weekends for events and meetings.
  • Travel may be required.

Qualifications:



Minimum Requirements



  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Four years of progressive and successful experience in advancement and/or other relevant roles requiring work with internal stakeholders and managing complex projects.


Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications



  • Graduate degree in a related field.
  • Direct experience working with healthcare professionals.
  • Direct experience working with higher education leadership.
  • Successful fundraising experience.
  • Work on a medical campus or in a hospital setting.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Experience interacting with senior-level executives, providing advice and guidance on strategy, process and prioritization.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Products; donor tracking software (Advance and Advance GP)
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing for both internal and external audiences.
  • Keen attention to detail in project management, juggling multiple time-sensitive projects and tasks simultaneously, and concisely communicating information clearly, accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to influence others by developing and maintaining interpersonal relationships with campus leaders, faculty, and colleagues.
  • Proven ability to equip others to communicate externally.
  • Expert at collaborations with executive teams on complex projects.
  • Ability to actively listen, analyze information/situations and solve problems.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information discretely and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to take a proactive approach; organize and manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously.
  • Poise and public speaking skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Knowledge of current issues facing public universities and interests of the medical/healthcare communities, students, faculty, and alumni.
  • Personal computer proficiency, especially Microsoft Office Products: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Computer skills may be subject to testing/verification.

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $90,000-$100,000

If you have prior state-classified service in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
