THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation's Tunnel Maintenance Office is seeking seasonal Tunnel Maintainers! Do you have experience in performing tunnel maintenance, traffic control & monitoring, and incident management? DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Winter Tunnel Maintainer, you will perform a variety of duties during the winter season, such as monitoring traffic flow and emergency response in any of the four tunnels within Allegheny County.

In this position, workers must be able to hook-up towing apparatus and tow and push disabled vehicles to a safe area, sweep garages, outside plazas, offices, fan house floors and perform general routine maintenance in and around the tunnels, including washing tunnel walls and manual cleaning of gutter lines.

Work may also include the repair of tunnel ceilings, walls, steps, curbs, doors, and plaza area roadways and sidewalks and the maintenance of plumbing fixtures and water lines in and around tunnels.

Work Hours and Additional Information:

  • Full-time, seasonal employment located in Allegheny County only

  • Hours will vary due to 24/7 operation.

  • Salary: Winter Tunnel Maintainers earn $24.42 per hour.
  • This is a seasonal position lasting from September through April, but there are frequent

    opportunities to obtain a permanent full-time position.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, on first day of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on first day of employment.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • Must obtain within the probationary period an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.
  • This position requires additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
