Equipment Services Manager - Night Shift

At Port Newark Container Terminal, the Equipment Services Manager is responsible for overseeing the overnight shift maintenance efforts across the organization. Manages maintenance activities for the upkeep of power equipment, cranes, vehicles, and reefer operations support. Oversees a range of maintenance activities, plans, and manages the Mainpac CMMS system. Resolve problems as they arise whether directly or by assembling teams to solve those issues.

Essential Duties:



  • Ensure safety of all equipment and take corrective action where necessary.
  • Communicate with Terminal and Marine management on maintenance issues and see that corrective measures are implemented where necessary.
  • Provides supervision and direction for the overnight maintenance staff.
  • Keep immediate managers aware of current operational status by regular communications and by issuing reports as directed.
  • Monitor accuracy of inventory and maintenance system to ensure availability of equipment.
  • Responsible for work order planning, prioritization and administration within maintenance operations and repairs in Mainpac.
  • Act as first point of contact for all engineering and maintenance related activity during the overnight operations including all reefer related activity between vessel operations, yard operations, rail operations and gate operations during the overnight shift
  • Ensures good communication between Maintenance, Terminal, and Marine operations to minimize downtime of equipment.
  • Maintain labor union relations to ensure high morale and quality production of work.
  • Coordinate with Safety and Health Office to ensure safety and health hazards are addressed immediately and conduct regular safety meetings within area of responsibility.
  • Ensure that area accident prevention/safety and worker's compensation programs and procedures are implemented, that labor is trained regularly and that accident occurrences continue to decline in frequency and severity.
  • Knowledge of union contracts and PNCT labor relations policies, ensuring positive labor relations, high levels of productivity and that all policies and procedures are followed.
  • Ensures that all administrative procedures and reports are completed accurately, submitted on time and to appropriate department manager, customers, and other designated personnel.
  • Available for after-hours emergencies that occur on weekends and holidays.
  • Verifies daily, weekly, and monthly labor records.
  • Responsible for preparation of a wide range of reports for local and corporate use.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications:



  • Management experience in a terminal or automotive shop environment
  • Heavy equipment repair experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Marine Engineering.

    • Equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.


  • 1+ practical experience in port/terminal operations managing equipment.
  • Knowledge of CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
  • Prior experience supervising union labor
  • Budgeting and profit and loss management experience


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Knowledge of general engineering principles covering mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering.
  • General knowledge of terminal and stevedoring operations, especially the coordination of cranes with vessel activity.
  • Must be able to interpret engineering drawings, layouts, and specifications.
  • Knowledge in PLC and drive control systems and overall container cranes' control and mechanical system.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and leadership principles, with the ability to influence other team members in a positive way and lead a department of trades workers.
  • Solid knowledge of applicable federal, state, and company safety regulations; be familiar with OSHA, National Electrical Code, and all other regulations, such as welding and electrical standards, that are required, both locally and at the state and federal level.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
  • High level of planning and organizational skills, with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize multiple projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, especially technical problems of a highly complex nature.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills in English.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management, labor, and customers.
  • Good interpersonal skills and a strong internal customer focus.
  • Solid management/team-building skills, preferably in a union environment; exposure to or experience with union contracts.
  • As the senior manager of this critical part of our facility, you must also be skilled in working collaboratively with operating management and personnel, financial and commercial managers.
  • A strong understanding of IT/systems utilization in the engineering and maintenance arenas.
  • Requires ability to use computerized software system(s), specifically those designed for maintenance and repair of cranes.
  • Exceptional time management, due to fast-moving, demanding work environment.
  • Ability to respond quickly and thoughtfully in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to respond to equipment emergencies outside of normal work shifts.



Physical Working Attributes:



  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, occasional sitting.
  • Climb up and down a ladder multiple times within a shift
  • work on a ship and in a yard
  • Work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.
  • Work in an environment with moving objects and machinery
  • The environment may be hazardous to persons unable to see or hear fast moving heavy equipment.
