About the Job

The candidate selected will serve as the inaugural Beatrice "Bean" E. Robinson, Ph.D. Endowed Chair in Clinical Sexual Health for the Eli Coleman Institute for Sexual and Gender Health (ISGH), Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis, Minnesota. They will support the development and expansion of clinical outcome research that contributes to the advancement of sex therapy and sexual health. The successful candidate's own research and clinical practice in sexual health will complement existing ISGH priorities, and support sustained excellence and continued growth in clinical excellence within ISGH.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Funding for developing new empirical knowledge about sexual health issues, sexual dysfunctions, and clinical outcomes is at an all-time low. The holder of this chair will initiate and develop evidence-based clinical outcome research leading to best clinical practices and approaches to sexual dysfunctions and sexual health more generally.
  • The Chair will provide leadership in clinical sexual health care and research for ISGH --- in coordination with the ISGH Director, Director of Research, and Director of Clinical Services, and the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health's (DFMCH) Vice Chair for Research, and Vice Chair for Clinical Care.
  • Provide individual, group, couple, and family psychotherapy for sexual dysfunctions and other sexual health concerns from a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and intersectional framework.
  • Collaborate with other researchers within the University of Minnesota, nationally, and internationally to promote research in key areas of clinical sexual health and sexual dysfunctions --- maintaining a funded personal program of clinical outcome research commensurate with rank.
  • Support advancement of clinical sexual health excellence at ISGH, within professional organizations, and within the field broadly. This may require collaboration and consultation with experts in quantitative and qualitative psychotherapy outcome research more broadly --- perhaps within the fields of psychology and family studies.
  • Support mentorship of faculty and staff and development of future projects at ISGH related to clinical sexual health.
  • Disseminate research findings through national and international presentations and publications.
  • Serve on committees within ISGH, DFMCH, the Medical School, and/or beyond which are appropriate in relation to the role.

Allocation of time to clinical or teaching responsibilities will be determined.

This clinician-researcher position is expected to be hired at the Associate or Full Professor level with tenure. Faculty rank and appointment will be commensurate with background and training, and will depend upon approval by the department Promotion and Tenure Committee and the Medical School.

About the Department

Founded more than 50 years ago, the Institute for Sexual and Gender Health (formerly the Program in Human Sexuality) is one of the largest clinical, teaching, and research institutions in the world specializing in human sexuality. We have a strong research agenda in compulsive sexual behavior, women's sexual health, transgender and non-binary health, and related areas, that has been supported by millions of dollars in state and federal funding, and we have developed innovative and effective treatment approaches to sexual and gender problems. The Institute has led the way nationally and internationally in crucial, often controversial, sexual issues and has worked with local, national, and international health agencies to advance public health policies promoting sexual health. We have also been national and international leaders in transgender and non-binary health, both in clinical practice and research. We offer graduate education through our Master of Professional Studies in Sexual Health, and provide physician education on sexual health through the medical curriculum. We encourage you to visit our website at https://med.umn.edu/sexualhealth.

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota was created more than 50 years ago in response to a legislative mandate to train primary care physicians. Since then, we have been leaders in transforming the specialty through education, research, and patient care. We are the academic sponsor of seven family medicine residencies-five in the Twin Cities, two in Greater Minnesota. We are involved in medical student education activities across the Medical School's two campuses: Twin Cities and Duluth. We sponsor five fellowship programs-sports medicine, hospice and palliative medicine, behavioral medicine, clinical informatics, and human sexuality- and offer continuing medical education opportunities. We are regularly among the top National Institutes of Health-funded family medicine departments. Our faculty are actively researching health disparities, healthcare delivery, and population health.
