Job Summary

The HIV Clinical Consultant will provide expert education and guidance to health care professionals nationally. The HIV Clinical Consultant should be able to provide expert guidance in the following areas:

  • HIV including medical management of persons living with HIV (i.e., HIV testing; HIV primary care; antiretroviral selection and treatment strategies; resistance testing interpretation; prevention, identification, and treatment of opportunistic infections; drug interactions and toxicity; and prevention of HIV transmission).
  • Viral hepatitis including evaluation and management of persons living with hepatitis B and/or C.
  • Managing occupational and non-occupational exposures to blood-borne pathogens (HIV, hepatitis B and C)
  • PrEP care: Specific topics may include HIV testing before and during/after PrEP; PrEP eligibility; antiretroviral monitoring and toxicity; drug interactions; STI and other BBP screening.

The HIV Clinical Consultant will answer incoming calls and ensure timely delivery of expert HIV consultation and perform administrative/operational duties that accompany the overall work of the project (such as performing journal reviews, participating in educational and quality improvement conferences, developing NCCC protocols, preparing materials to distribute to callers).

Department Description

The National Clinician Consultation Center (NCCC) at the Department of Family & Community Medicine (FCM) provides immediate, state-of-the-art HIV/AIDS-related clinical consultation to health care providers (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists and other health care professionals) across the country through six telephone and online consultation services: * HIV/AIDS Management Consultation Service (Warmline): 6:00 am - 5:00 pm PST * Post-Exposure Prophylaxis Consultation Service (PEPline): 6:00 am - 5:00 pm PST * Perinatal HIV Consultation and Referral Service: 24/7 * Hepatitis C Consultation Service: 6:00 am - 5:00 pm PST * Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Consultation Service (PrEPline): 6:00 am - 5:00 pm PST * Substance Use Warmline: 6:00 am - 5:00 pm PST.

Required Qualifications


  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) or equivalent training.
  • Intensive knowledge and expertise of pharmaceutical theory in a specialty theory. Knowledge of developments in research and design in areas of specialization including new or reformulated products being developed by medical and pharmaceutical researchers. Stays updated on industry trends and best practices in optimizing the use of medication to treat patients.
  • Advanced understanding of how to compound, prepare, mix, and manufacture sophisticated or rare medicines in specialty area. Ability to work carefully, methodically and accurately.
  • Highly developed project management skills to manage multiple priorities, lead projects from inception to completion on schedule, and deliver responsive customer service. Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility, anticipates and effectively handles change.
  • Sharp analytical and critical-thinking skills and scientific aptitude. Critical thinking skills to challenge conventional practices and apply knowledge to recommend innovative, industry leading improvements. Ability to identify problems before they arise and solve complex, wide reaching problems when no precedent exists.
  • Interpersonal skills to maintain relationships with healthcare professionals on consulting team, callers, and administrative staff and develop relationships with industry leaders. Interpersonal skills to address sensitive patient situations with a caring and sympathetic manner.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to document consultation encounters accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Minimum 5 years prior experience analyzing clinical studies and including new developments and approaches into clinical practice and/or consultation to other clinical providers.
  • Demonstrated competence in the following areas: clinical practice and health information systems, communication (including clinical counseling and information sharing), clinical case management, leadership, problem identification and resolution, and teaching

Preferred Qualifications


  • Post graduate year 1 [PGY1] In Pharmacy Practice or equivalent experience
  • Post graduate year 2 [PGY2] in area of specialty practice or equivalent experience in specialty area required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with HCV treatment and monitoring
  • Prior experience managing complex blood borne pathogen exposures.
  • Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy and / or Board Certification in Specialty Practice [if available]
  • AAHIVP: AAHIVM-recognized HIV Pharmacist

License/Certification


  • Registered Pharmacist.
