Job Summary:



This position reports directly to Dr. Cara C. Wilson in the Infectious Diseases Division, Department of Medicine. Dr Wilson's Translational Research Program is focused on understanding microbe-host interactions and the mechanisms by which gut microbes and immune cells contribute to gut homeostasis and pathogenesis, and to chronic inflammatory processes in HIV and aging. The ideal Postdoctoral Fellow will work to develop a research project aligned with the overall goals of the team. Responsibilities include designing and performing experiments, analyzing data, contributing to the writing of manuscripts and grants, and aiding in oversight of more junior team members. We are seeking a team member who is passionate about performing original research in an academic setting, has excellent organizational skills, is able to work both independently and in a team setting and is dedicated to maintaining a healthy and respectful workplace. Experience in the development and application of large-scale sequencing and bioinformatics methods to analyze cellular models would be preferred.

Specific Position Duties with Percentages of Time

Primary Research [90%]



  • Design and develop experimental and analytical methods to investigate host-microbe interactions in the setting of HIV infection and/or physiological aging. Work performed in this role will primarily consist of tissue culture experiments using human intestinal tissue, blood samples, experimental virus infections and whole bacteria or bacterial products. The successful applicant will be expected to add to the wide-ranging investigative techniques currently utilized in the laboratory and will be expected to work closely with the research team to develop "big-omics" approaches to further our understanding of host-microbe processes.
  • Interpret data and communicate experimental results and findings in both spoken and written formats to colleagues both within and outside the institution.
  • Assist in the writing of manuscripts and grants.


Lab Support [10%]



  • Assist in general upkeep and safety compliance of the laboratory.
  • Assist in processing of human specimens as needed for all ongoing laboratory research projects.
  • Assist in training of undergraduate and graduate students.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.



  • PhD in Immunology, Microbiology, Virology and/or Molecular Biology.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience with common laboratory cellular and molecular biology techniques including in vitro culture, multi-color flow cytometry and transcriptomics.
  • Experience with statistical, and/or machine learning, and/or data science approaches to analyze quantitative large-scale transcriptomics and/or other 'omics datasets such as RNAseq and epigenetic analyses.
  • Evidence of successful completion of research projects including a first-authored original article in a relevant area in a peer-reviewed journal within the past 5 years.
  • Evidence of experience and competency to seek additional external research funding either individually or as part of a team.


Conditions of Employment:

Successful candidates must fulfil eligibility requirements for NIH-sponsored Institutional Training Grants (U.S. citizen or permanent resident), and be willing to apply to an appropriate Training Program (e.g. ADEAR T32 Training Program).

Must be willing and able to maintain appropriate working hours to conduct experiments and report timely research progress to colleagues and supervisor

Must be willing and able to sustain prolonged periods of sitting or standing in the laboratory environment.

Must be willing and able to handle, carry, and lift objects encountered in the research setting, up to 10 kg in weight.

Must be willing and able to work in a standard research environment that may contain fumes, chemicals, liquid nitrogen, sharp objects, hazardous materials, tissue, and body fluids. Work is conducted in Biosafety Level (BSL) 2+ and BSL3 facilities and will require proficiency in a biocontainment laboratory.

Must be willing and able to work with complex laboratory equipment, chemical solutions, and biological materials.

Must be willing and able to travel nationally or internationally to scientific conferences up to twice a year where required and approved, and to present and participate in campus academic activities such as seminars and journal clubs.

Must comply with training associated with Biosafety, Chemical Safety, Human Subject Research and others as required by the experimental procedures.

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$54,840 to $66,600

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
