Qualifications



  • High school diploma.
  • Ability to work with and communicate with children and families of diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups.
  • Ability to make independent and effective decisions.
  • Experience supervising and working with children.
  • Be a team player as well as able to work independently.
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups of varying age and skill levels, and provide necessary instruction to children and information to families.
  • Ability to observe and assess children's behavior enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Must be willing to support the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • Must pass The Salvation Army background checks.
  • Must become certified in CPR and First Aid training.
  • It must be understood by the incumbent that the provisions of Safe From Harm will apply upon commencement of employment and also understood that the required Safe From Harm training be satisfactorily completed within the first week of employment.


Position Summary

The Summer Day Camp Counselor plays an important role in the development of youth by fostering fun, communication, growth, safety and health. This position will oversee the daily activities and development of elementary schoolers in Community Center programming while maintaining positive relationships with their families.

This is a temporary, part-time position with an expectation of working twenty-five (25) hours per week during the eight (8) week Summer Day Camp program season. In addition, training and facility preparation will take place the weeks before and after the regular program weeks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This job description is not all inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential duties of the position. Other duties, responsibilities and tasks may be assigned by Youth and Community Outreach Ministries Director and Corps Officers.



  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, children and families; respect of others' property and person and professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors, and subordinates.
  • Support the mission of The Salvation Army by treating every child, family and colleague with individual respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind.
  • Greet and accommodate the needs of youth and families who participate in Community Center programs.
  • Ensure the safety of children in Community Center programs by maintaining a safe and positive environment.
  • Support Youth and Community Outreach Ministries Director by enforcing policies regarding payment, late fees, safety, and behavior expectations.
  • Responsible for implementing and developing programing and activities that align with the daily schedule of activities.
  • Responsible for tracking and reporting daily statistics.
  • Use program time to engage children in meaningful conversation, activities and learning experiences.
  • Encourage respect for individuality and differences in each child.
  • Set a good example for children and others by implementing a culture of cleanliness, punctuality, sportsmanship, manners, encouragement and asking for help.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Working Conditions

There are normally no hazardous or significantly unpleasant physical working conditions, with the exception of the occasional emotional distress or turmoil (due to varying situations) with and between staff and/or clients. The duties and responsibilities of this position cannot be performed from home.

Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Risk Level

Risk Level 2 - The task or activities conducted by Risk Level 2 workers do not involve reasonably anticipated exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, but could result in such exposure in non-routine, emergency situations.

Verbal Communication



  • Ability to verbally communicate in person where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions, information, and ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Written communication with staff; especially information and directives from Youth Ministry Director, Corps and Community Ministries Director and Corps Officers.


Auditory Processing



  • Able to hear average or normal conversations with ability to process heard information.


Visual Processing



  • Average ability to view computers screens and printed documents in order to prepare and inspect documents.


Physical Ability



  • Movements frequently and regularly required using the majority of the body to sit, stand and bend.
  • Able to stand and remain active for approximately 50% of work day.
  • Able to exert up to 40 pounds of force occasionally.


Mental Activities and Requirements of Position

Reasoning Ability



  • Able to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.
  • Able to interpret various instructions.


Mathematics Ability



  • Able to perform basic math skills, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and percentages.


Language Ability



  • Able to speak, read, and write fluently in English.
  • Able to read a variety of informational material.
  • Able to prepare memos or program materials using proper punctuation, spelling and grammar.
  • Able to communicate distinctly with appropriate pauses and emphasis; correct punctuation and variation in word order; using present, perfect, and future tenses.
