CO Sr. Physician Assistant

We are seeking a CO Sr.Physician Assistantwho will practice within the guidelines of the department and institution in accordance with the Physician Assistant Delegation Agreement required and approved by the State of Maryland and appropriately credentialed by the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Physician Assistants are classified as senior staff by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Physician Assistants will work under the direction, supervision and responsibility of an attending physician, and in accordance with established policies evaluate patient health status through diagnostic procedures and tests. Physician Assistants will work alongside fellows, residents, nurses, radiologic technologists and other healthcare professionals to provide the highest quality therapeutic patient care. Physician Assistants must have a comprehensive understanding of clinic and/or surgical procedures, patient care, procedures, medical protocols and testing procedures. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, psychology, pharmacology, clinical medicine, radiology, microbiology and pathology.

Interventional Neuroradiology has three core Physician Assistant concentrations. These include, Lab Proceduralist, Clinic Patient Care, and Bedside Proceduralist. A PA may be assigned to one concentration or may work in several. Descriptions of the roles and responsibilities within each of the concentrations have been provided below.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Interventional Radiology Lab Proceduralist

  • Performs emergent, urgent, and routine image guided procedures in accordance with staff member's SOM Delineation of Privileges and approved State Delegation under the direction of an attending physician. These procedures include but are not limited to placement and removal of femoral arterial or venous catheters and fluoroscopic guided lumbar puncture.
  • Assists with emergent, urgent, and routine image guided procedures in accordance with staff member's SOM Delineation of Privileges and approved State Delegation under the direction of an attending physician. These procedures include but are not limited to diagnostic and therapeutic cerebral and spinal angiography, percutaneous sclerotherapy/embolization, vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty, image guided (CT or fluoroscopy) spine biopsies, and osseous lesion ablation.
  • Under the direction of a physician and within the scope of practice will review the clinical needs of the patient and referring service to confirm the appropriateness of the ordered intervention. In certain circumstances, this may require the PA to collaborate with other services to ensure the most appropriate care course is pursued.
  • Review/obtain medical history (including patient medications, allergies and prior procedure records) and perform focused physical examination to ensure patients have been properly screened for the procedure.
  • Review/obtain laboratory tests, imaging studies and other diagnostic tests where necessary.
  • Obtain informed consent, discussing the risks, benefits and alternative therapy options.
  • Place order for the administration of conscious IV sedation.
  • Monitor intra-procedure vital signs and level of sedation.
  • Manage patient complications during and after procedure.
  • May participate in clinical research initiatives as study team member.
  • Initiate a Code and perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR/ACLS) where necessary.
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff, and divisional needs.
  • Ability to remain in stationary position and move about in a procedural suite. Visual acuity and dexterity to operate procedural equipment. Lifting, raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Ability to concentrate during surgical procedures while assisting physician.

Clinic Patient Care

  • Analyze and evaluate patient history, physical examination findings and laboratory values, and makes preliminary diagnosis of patients for review by physicians.
  • Serve as an educational and clinical resource to multi-disciplinary staff in and outside of Johns Hopkins as well as to patients and their families.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary conferences to coordinates patient care by a team of specialty care practitioners.
  • Perform clinic and hospital-based patient assessments/consultations to determine whether or not a patient is a candidate for a specific intervention. This process should include obtaining detailed medical histories, reviewing medical records, performing physical examinations and ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, imaging studies and other diagnostic examinations.
  • May participate in clinical research initiatives as study team member.
  • Assist in the admission, inpatient management and discharge of Interventional Neuroradiology patients.
  • May assist attending physicians in work of clinical specialty involving greater level of managing complex patients through advanced decision making and greater level of independence in doing assessments and procedures.
  • Ability to remain in stationary position and move about in a clinical setting. Visual acuity and dexterity to use and operate clinical equipment. Lifting, raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.

Bedside Proceduralist

  • Performs emergent, urgent, and routine image guided procedures in accordance with staff member's SOM Delineation of Privileges and approved State Delegation. These procedures include but are not limited to placement and removal of femoral arterial and venous catheters. .
  • Review the clinical needs of the patient and referring service to confirm the appropriateness of the ordered intervention. In certain circumstances, this may require the PA to collaborate with other services to ensure the most appropriate care course is pursued.
  • Review/obtain medical history (including patient medications, allergies and prior procedure records) and perform focused physical examination to ensure patients have been properly screened for the procedure.
  • Obtain informed consent, discussing the risks, benefits and alternative therapy options. Accurate and timely documentation of procedure notes within EPIC.
  • Review/obtain laboratory tests, imaging studies and other diagnostic tests where necessary. Use the PACS system to capture and store all procedure imaging.
  • Manage patient complications during and after procedure. Initiate a Code and perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR/ACLS) where necessary.
  • Ability to remain in stationary position and move about in a procedural and clinical area. Visual acuity and dexterity to operate procedural equipment. Lifting, raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree, Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Minimum of 3 year's experience in related clinical area and obtained proficiency in area of specialty. Five years related experience preferred.
  • Residency or fellowship programs in area of specialization may substitute for some experience.
