    Position Title: Middle School Self-Contained Special Education Teacher

    Location: Beach Park Middle School, Beach Park, IL

    Job Type: Full-time

    Reports To: Special Education Coordinator / School Principal

    Position Summary:

    The Middle School Self-Contained Special Education Teacher provides direct, individualized instruction to students with significant learning, behavioral, or developmental disabilities in a self-contained classroom setting. This teacher is responsible for creating a structured, supportive environment that fosters academic, social, and emotional growth for each student according to their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Additionally, the teacher collaborates with general education teachers to support the integration of students in the general education setting, helping facilitate a smooth transition for activities and subjects where students can participate.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Instruction and Classroom Management:

      • Develop and deliver specialized instructional programs tailored to meet the academic and functional needs of each student.

      • Implement a structured and consistent classroom management plan, using positive behavior supports and individualized reinforcement strategies.

      • Adapt curriculum materials to accommodate various learning styles, communication needs, and developmental levels.

    2. IEP Development and Compliance:

      • Collaborate with parents, support staff, and multidisciplinary teams to develop, update, and review IEPs in alignment with Illinois state regulations.

      • Document and monitor student progress toward IEP goals, adjusting instructional approaches based on data and student growth.

      • Ensure compliance with IDEA and other state and federal guidelines related to special education.

      • Serve as student advocate and case manager

    3. Behavioral and Social-Emotional Support:

      • Use behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and individualized social-emotional support strategies to address behavioral challenges and foster social skills development.

      • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student independence, confidence, and respect for others.

    4. Collaboration and Integration:

      • Work closely with general education teachers to integrate students from the self-contained classroom into general education activities where appropriate.

      • Provide strategies, support, and accommodations to general education teachers to facilitate student success in inclusive settings.

      • Act as a liaison to ensure that each student's unique needs are met while participating in the general education classroom.

    5. Professional Development and Record-Keeping:

      • Participate in ongoing professional development to stay updated on evidence-based practices, teaching strategies, and special education regulations.

      • Maintain accurate and thorough records of student progress, attendance, and any relevant documentation required by the school district or state.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field (Master's degree preferred).

    • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with LBS1 Endorsement.

    • Experience working with middle school students in a self-contained or similar special education setting preferred.

    • In-depth understanding of IDEA, behavior intervention plans, and Illinois state requirements.

    • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.

    Preferred Skills:

    • Proficiency in adaptive technology and assistive devices.

    • Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques or other behavior management methodologies.

    • Ability to build strong, positive relationships with students, families, and staff members.

    Working Conditions:

    • School-based setting with primary work in a designated self-contained classroom.

    • May involve physical activities such as lifting, standing for extended periods, and assisting students with mobility needs.

    • Hours aligned with the middle school schedule; occasional after-school meetings may be required.
