Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Interdisciplinary Studies Programs in the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts houses the Interdisciplinary BA and MA programs, the Gender Studies Research Center, and is a hub for the Interdisciplinary Minors in the College. The unit works collaboratively to align priorities around student success.
The IDS BA degree is a rapidly growing major with close to 200 majors across modalities. Students take three common core classes, have three additional core competencies in Critical Reasoning, Intellectual Inquiry, and Global Perspectives, and then choose from one of six concentration tracks in courses across the University. The six concentration tracks include: Enterprise and Economy; Global Challenges and Problems; Justice, Social Institutions, and Human Behavior; Artificial Intelligence and Technology in the Arts and Sciences; Interdisciplinary Arts and Humanities; and Human Wellbeing.
We have recently launched the program in an asynchronous online accelerated modality where we emphasize authentic student-faculty engagement for adult learners. The primary driver for the IDS degree is to reduce barriers to high-quality, career-relevant education by embracing the range of experiences of our students. We support flexible pathways to graduation through curriculum and modality, always with the student experience in mind.
