Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Business Unit President, the Director, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) provides overall leadership for environmental, health, and safety strategy and compliance across all global locations within the Howmet Structure Systems (HSS) business unit. This role ensures compliance and sustainable execution in all Company programs and initiatives, such as Fatality Prevention, Human Performance, EHS metrics, and compliance self-assessment.

Job Dimensions:

  • Leads the EHS Organization within the business unit to deploy strategies that help protect all employees, contractors, customers, and communities where HSS sites operate.
  • Develops strategies and objectives to drive the Howmet values and vision for Environmental, Health and Safety.
  • Assures customer and sustainability EHS requirements are met.
  • Provides leadership support on the Howmet EHS Council. Represents HSS on the Council and contributes to drive best in class performance for EHS across the corporation.
  • Leads EHS within a matrix structure by active work and communication with locations EHS teams and management.
  • Coaches and communicates across all hierarchical levels.
  • Leads and implements EHS programs and influences EHS management systems in manufacturing environments.
  • Develops and implements standardized EHS reporting methods and metrics.
  • Demonstrates broad understanding of federal, state and local regulations and the ability to translate any concerns into an effective action plan.

Major Activities & Key Challenges:

  • Provides weekly update reports to leadership team on EHS statistics, incidents activities, successes and challenges.
  • Facilitates the Human Performance and Fatality Prevention process.
  • Ensures compliance with the Howmet Audit Self-Assessment and Testing process for EHS standards so that locations are audit ready.
  • Sets metrics to drive performance for sustainability improvements.
  • Develops standard communications with HSS locations to assure EHS goals and objectives are implemented.
  • Provides technical support and resources to manufacturing locations, including several high-risk, heavy manufacturing locations.
  • Oversees HSS workers' compensation process as managed by manufacturing locations.
  • Leads the business facility risk management process with loss prevention insurance provider.
  • Possesses ability to collaborate across time zones and experience communicating and managing cultural differences.
  • Promotes continuous improvement efforts within the EHS function.
  • Provides skills coaching for EHS professionals at locations.
  • Develops and implements programs to ensure regulatory compliance while minimizing risk across all locations. Standardize operational practices across all sites.
  • Leads EHS compliance reviews, general risk assessments, and other safety assessments.
  • Works directly with Federal, State, and Local agencies during visits and inspections
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge for all Federal, State and Local regulations.

Environment:

  • Travel approximately 25-50% to HSS locations.
  • Ability to work in hot, noisy environments to conduct EHS assessments on a regular basis.
  • Work is performed in an office setting with occasional exposure to industrial operations including temperature extremes from approximately 35F to 100F; noise levels in excess of 85 dB; moisture and moving machinery.
  • Must wear PPE including hearing protection: plugs/muffs, hardhats, metatarsal safety footwear and/or safety glasses.
  • This position is based in Cleveland, Ohio and reports directly to the Business Unit President with a dotted line to Howmet's global EHS lead.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in a Safety, Health or Environmental ABET accredited degree program or a technical BS degree (chemistry, biology, engineering, etc.)
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in EHS management, preferably with Global experience
  • Strong leadership, organization, and project management skills.
  • Ability to effectively drive change through a matrix organization.
  • Ability to set and communicate clear direction through all levels of the organization
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Human and Organizational Performance processes.
  • Leadership in a Fatal and Serious Injury prevention process
  • Intermediate understanding of environmental regulations of air, water and waste permits.
  • Successful negotiation of environmental permits.
  • Intermediate understanding of occupational health and medical industrial protocols to drive health compliance and wellness.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.
