Job Description
What will you do as an R&D Co-op (Mechanical Engineer) at Sealed Air?

As an R&D Co-op (Mechanical Engineer), you'll gain hands-on experience supporting Sealed Air's global Research and Development team and contributing to projects across food, medical, and protective packaging. You'll work alongside Application Experts and project teams to test, troubleshoot, design, and build packaging equipment and components. You'll use engineering tools such as SolidWorks, prepare engineering drawings, develop prototypes, and conduct machine and product testing. Each rotation is designed around a project assignment, giving you the opportunity to present your results and impact to leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Test, troubleshoot, assemble, and modify food packaging equipment and components through hands-on engineering work.
  • Design new equipment and components using SolidWorks to support ongoing R&D projects.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing to build prototypes and commercial equipment.
  • Prepare and modify engineering drawings for active development projects.
  • Plan and conduct machine testing to validate equipment performance and fitness for use in the field.
  • Plan and conduct experiments supporting the development of new products and processes under the direction of experienced scientists and engineers.
  • Support field installations and testing as needed, applying hands-on engineering knowledge in real-world environments.
  • Collaborate on project teams and communicate results, including preparing and delivering formal presentations to leadership at the end of each rotation.

Qualifications
What do you need to succeed?

  • Strong hands-on mechanical engineering and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks and mechanical design principles.
  • Ability to create and modify engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of laboratory and machine shop practices.
  • Ability to assemble, modify, troubleshoot, and test mechanical equipment and components.
  • Ability to plan and execute engineering experiments, equipment testing, and product/process development activities.
  • Strong creative thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the flexibility to travel up to 30% and work in hands-on manufacturing/R&D environments, including direct contact with raw meat and protein products and extended workdays in 40F environments as needed.
