JOURNEY GROUP: OUR STORY
Journey Group is a full-service construction group headquartered in Sioux Falls, S.D., with four divisions serving commercial, manufacturing, industrial, civil, residential, and asphalt markets. We are known for building strong relationships, delivering high-quality projects, and operating with integrity, teamwork, and fiscal responsibility. At Journey, you're not just joining a company - you're joining a team committed to building communities and growing together.

OUR OPENING

We're growing and looking to add a Design Manager to our Journey Construction team. This new position serves as the bridge between design and construction management. You'll be a trusted partner to owners on design matters, keep architects, engineers, and our construction teams aligned, and lead the creation of Journey's in-house design function. You'll also stay hands-on, producing design and documentation work on select projects. This role works alongside our Preconstruction team and will primarily support healthcare, renovation, and commercial/industrial projects.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO AS A DESIGN MANAGER?

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for owners on design-related matters, building strong, long-term client relationships
  • Act as the liaison between owners, architects, engineers, and Journey's construction teams, keeping design intent, owner expectations, and construction execution aligned
  • Present design updates, options, and recommendations to owners and stakeholders
  • Lead the development of Journey's in-house design function, including standards, templates, detail libraries, tools, and workflows
  • Determine when work should be designed in-house or by outside consultants, and manage consultant scopes and agreements
  • Review drawings and specifications for completeness, constructability, and code and healthcare compliance before they're issued
  • Partner with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Preconstruction to align design with budgets and schedules and reduce rework and RFIs
  • Resolve design issues during construction, including RFIs, submittals, and clarifications
  • Produce design and construction documents on select projects, including scope drawings, details, and renovation and phasing plans
  • Support business development by communicating Journey's design capabilities to owners, architects, and prospective clients
