Job Summary:

The Sr. Director of Cloud Data Architecture is a deep technical leader with hands-on experience in all aspects of data architecture and infrastructure with a specific focus on creating and managing cloud-based data architectures. Ideal candidate will have at least 15 years of experience in advanced data analytics and 8 years of cloud-based data management. Good business acumen in the health plan and health care in general is critical for this role. The Sr. Director will not only be able to develop a data architecture strategy but provide a roadmap for transitioning from WellSense's current data warehouse capabilities to a new cloud-based data infrastructure.
Developing and/or enhancing the strategic architecture for healthcare data to provide state of the art data management processes, data quality, technology, reporting and analytics will be fundamental to this role. This person will lead WellSense's efforts to aggregate and modernize all the health data and convert it into actionable insights and actionable analytics, and to implement new enterprise processes and technologies to ensure compliance to healthcare regulatory requirements.
In addition, the Sr. Director role will collaborate with the leaders across the organization to leverage cross-functional data and to drive strategic decision-making at the highest levels of the company. This role ensures the integrity, availability, and security of healthcare payer data, while also championing the use of data-driven insights to optimize operational efficiency and inform strategic decisions.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership: In collaboration with Senior Leadership, establish and drive WellSense's overall enterprise data strategy, in line with the organization's vision, leveraging best practices in cloud-based technologies. Take WellSense data and analytics capabilities to an entirely new level of scale, effectiveness, and sophistication by leveraging industry standards and frameworks.

Data Governance: Establish and enforce policies, standards, and procedures for the enterprise-wide data lifecycle to ensure data accuracy, consistency, security and compliance with their regulatory bodies; CMS, DHHS, and EOHHS. Establish Data Catalog to ensure standardization of definitions, classification of sensitive and PHI data, and providing data lineage.

Data Quality: Ensure data within WellSense repositories are of the highest level of quality to pass regulatory requirements. Additionally, provide the ability to monitor and remediate data quality issues. Work closely with data stewards and subject matter experts for continuous improvement of data quality.

Team Management: Recruit, lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of data architects, to support data management and analytics activities. Coach and develop staff, ensuring progressive growth and development. Provide an inclusive environment, lead by example, and communicate and work in an open and collaborative style.

Data Infrastructure & Architecture: Oversee the evaluation, selection, design, implementation, and maintenance of the data infrastructure, including data lake, data marts, and other data repositories being used for providing insight and data delivery to regulators and other internal/external stakeholders.

Budget and Cost Estimation: Work with the Vice President, Enterprise Data Analytics to determine estimated costs of setup and maintenance of the data infrastructures, including setup costs, monthly recurring charges, and labor costs for implementation and support.

Advanced Analytics: Be a prolific champion of the use of data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and predictive modeling to provide insights that help to drive decision-making and innovation.

Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional leaders to ensure data needs are understood and met, data is seamlessly integrated across systems, and insights are effectively translated into actionable strategies.

Compliance & Security: Ensure all data activities comply with healthcare industry regulations (e.g., HIPAA, HEDIS) and maintain the highest standards of data security at all layers of the architecture stack.

Continuous Improvement: Stay updated with the latest industry trends, tools, and technologies in data management and analytics to ensure the organization remains at the forefront. Evaluate and leverage generative AI as an aid in providing insights into encounter data as well as its ability to reduce development time.

Vendor Relationship: Partner with strategic vendors to provide access to expertise and costs savings in enablement of data management strategy. Develop and manage relationships with WellSense's partners and ensure they understand the data needs and are held accountable to deliver data that meets those needs.

Required Skills:

Demonstrated success in leading Data Architecture teams for similarly sized organizations. Experience in the planning and execution of on premise data warehouse(s) to cloud-based architectures. Deep knowledge of AWS as it relates to data management, data security, and availability. Experience in leading, growing, and maintaining high performing teams. Demonstrated experience with collaborating with technical and non-technical stakeholders. Willingness to get hands-on in the execution of the team's work. Effective communicator who is comfortable presenting to junior staff through senior-level executives. Knowledge of cost estimation and budgeting as it relates to cloud management.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field
  • 12+ years of experience in leading strategy, innovation, and architecting data projects and products, specifically cloud-based data solutions



Compensation Range

$173,000 - $251,000

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensure as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness. In addition, WellSense offers generous total compensation that includes, but is not limited to, benefits (medical, dental, vision, pharmacy), merit increases, Flexible Spending Accounts, 403(b) savings matches, paid time off, career advancement opportunities, and resources to support employee and family wellbeing.

Note: This range is based on Boston-area data, and is subject to modification based on geographic location.
