Digital Scholarship and Instruction Specialist

DIGITAL SCHOLARSHIP & INSTRUCTION SPECIALIST
(10-MONTH APPOINTMENT, 20 HOURS PER WEEK)

Reporting to the Director of the Research Commons (or the Explore & Learn Pillar Lead), the Digital Scholarship & Instruction Specialist (Library Specialist PLC3/4A) supports the Research Commons' Explore & Learn and Create & Collaborate service pillars by providing instruction, consultation, and digital media production expertise that advances high impact research across the University of Iowa. This position develops and teaches digital scholarship workshops and short courses, mentors graduate students and fellows, creates multimedia resources that communicate research and creative work, and collaborates with faculty, students, and Libraries colleagues on digital scholarship initiatives. The position also contributes to sustainable, accessible media production workflows that support research, teaching, and public engagement.

General responsibilities include:

* Develop and teach workshops, short courses, and instructional resources in digital scholarship topics, including podcasting, audio storytelling, video production, graphic design, data visualization, and digital media workflows.

* Provide one-on-one consultations and mentorship to graduate students, faculty, and researchers developing digital scholarship projects and public-facing research outputs.

* Support the Digital Scholarship & Publishing Summer Fellowship Program and other Research Commons instructional initiatives through mentoring, project guidance, and media production support.

* Plan, capture, edit, and produce high-quality audio, video, photography, and multimedia content that supports research dissemination, exhibitions, digital collections, and scholarly communication.

* Collaborate with faculty, Libraries staff, and campus partners to develop compelling visual narratives and digital scholarship projects that communicate research to academic and public audiences.

* Promote accessible and sustainable digital scholarship practices by incorporating captioning, visual accessibility, documentation, and workflow standards into media production and instruction.

* Contribute to the development and documentation of digital scholarship workflows, instructional materials, and best practices that improve the long-term sustainability of Research Commons services.

* Support emerging areas of digital scholarship, including photogrammetry, GIS, UX design, metadata documentation, and digital collections initiatives.

* Participate in Research Commons outreach activities, events, and collaborative initiatives that promote digital scholarship services across campus.

Qualifications:

Required

* Master's degree in digital media, instructional technology, communications, design, digital humanities, library and information science, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

* Demonstrated experience producing digital media, including audio, video, photography, graphic design, or motion graphics.

* Experience teaching or facilitating workshops, courses, or instructional sessions.

* Proficiency with industry-standard creative software such as Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Premiere Pro, Audition, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, or similar tools).

* Demonstrated understanding of accessibility standards and inclusive practices for digital media production.

* Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment while managing multiple projects and priorities.

* Demonstrated ability to foster a welcoming and respectful environment in professional, academic, or community settings.

Desired

* Experience supporting digital scholarship, digital humanities, or scholarly communication initiatives in a higher education environment.

* Familiarity with digital storytelling, data visualization, UX design, or public scholarship.

* Experience creating instructional materials, online tutorials, or curriculum for digital scholarship topics.

* Familiarity with metadata standards, digital collections, GIS, photogrammetry, or emerging digital scholarship technologies.

* Demonstrated interest in professional development related to digital scholarship, instructional design, or research technologies.

This is a biweekly temporary P&S position to be filled at 20 hours per week for 10 months. This position does not include the University's full employee benefit program. The wage is $26.44/hour.
