Department's Website: Under the direction of the Dean of Career and Workforce Education, this part-time faculty position serves as the Lead Instructor responsible for coordinating and delivering high-quality, rigorous instruction for the Firefighter Rookie School. When an individual accepts an adjunct teaching appointment at UACCB, they accept responsibilities and obligations as a professional educator under the direction of the appropriate academic dean. The primary duty is leading assigned academy classes, incorporating classroom theory, practical skills labs, and live-fire/field training exercises to prepare recruit cadets for state/national certifications (e.g., IFSAC/Pro Board Firefighter I & II) and entry-level fire service positions. This role involves executing standard course curricula in conjunction with the Arkansas Fire Training Academy (AFTA), enforcing strict paramilitary discipline and safety protocols, evaluating recruit skill progression, and maintaining instructional fire apparatus, personal protective equipment (PPE), and training facilities in compliance with NFPA, OSHA, state fire academy, and institutional policies. Key duties include adhering to the campus name badge policy, treating all visitors as guests, engaging with the campus community by reviewing institutional communications, participating in campus events, and supporting a collaborative, positive workplace environment. Position Duties 50% - Classroom, Field, and Live-Burn Instruction Delivers comprehensive instruction in structural firefighting, hazardous materials operations, rescue tactics, wildland firefighting, and emergency medical response. Coordinates daily academy schedules, skill rotations, and field drills. Develops and assesses student learning outcomes to ensure competency in both credit and non-credit academy tracks. Utilizes the student learning management system to track, attendance, and skill check-offs while enforcing zero-compromise safety standards during high-hazard training scenarios. 35% - Program Coordination & Faculty Oversight Oversees the operational coordination of the Firefighter Rookie School and per-course adjunct instructional staff. Responsibilities include identifying course staffing needs, initiating and routing adjunct employment contracts, assigning qualified faculty to specific academy modules, and providing continuous onboarding, administrative, and instructional support. Serves as the primary point of contact for adjunct instructors to address classroom needs, resource allocation, course scheduling, and instructional compliance. Coordinates all administrative activities with AFTA. 15% - Student Retention & Recruitment Supports cadet success by implementing retention strategies, providing mentorship, and offering structured feedback to recruits struggling with physical or academic requirements. Maintains regular availability for academic support and guidance. Assists with program outreach, fire department liaison efforts, student tours, and recruitment events to promote the Firefighter Rookie School. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge Fire Operations & Standards: Thorough understanding of structural firefighting, rescue tactics, hazardous materials operations, incident command systems (ICS/NIMS), and national standards (NFPA, OSHA, State Fire Academy regulations). Safety & Compliance: Extensive knowledge of workplace safety, live-fire evolution safety (NFPA 1403), SCBA use, Mayday procedures, and firefighter health and wellness principles. Educational Technology: Knowledge of adult learning principles, practical skill drill structures, and utilization of learning management systems (LMS). Skills Equipment Operation & Maintenance: Skill in operating, inspecting, and troubleshooting fire apparatus, pumps, rescue tools, thermal imaging cameras, and structural gear. Instruction & Evaluation: Skill in teaching, leading, and evaluating cadet performance across classroom and practical field environments under high-stress conditions. Organization & Problem-Solving: Skill in time management, drill scenario management, and troubleshooting challenges under real-time field constraints. Interpersonal & Communication: Skill in professional communication and building cooperative relationships with diverse groups (faculty, students, staff, municipal chiefs, employers, community). Abilities Adaptability: Ability to teach across various formats, manage dynamic field conditions, and handle both credit and non-credit coursework. Student-Centered Support: Ability to perform duties that support cadet retention, program completion, and state certification goals. Instructional Leadership: Ability to supervise, train, assign, and evaluate assistant instructors and cadets; give clear instructions; and meet established schedules/timelines. Technology Utilization: Ability to utilize instructional technology effectively in a teaching environment to enhance student learning. Qualifications: Qualifications High school diploma with a minimum of five years of documented career or volunteer fire service experience, valid Firefighter I & II state/IFSAC certifications, and state-certified Fire Instructor credentials, OR an associate's degree or higher in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or a related field with a minimum of two years of documented fire service experience. Ability to communicate effectively and utilize technology in teaching. Preferred Qualifications
