Engineering Technician, Controls Engineering

Tesla Motors, Inc.
paid holidays, flex time, 401(k)
United States, Texas, Austin
Aug 25, 2026
What to Expect

Tesla is building the production systems that will manufacture Cybercab at scale. At Giga Texas, that work happens on the floor every day through hands-on installation, checkout, and support of automation equipment.

Join the Production Control team as an Engineering Technician supporting Cybercab production across factory automation - including AMR installation, conveyors, and production equipment. You will work alongside Controls Engineers to install, wire, test, troubleshoot, and keep systems running so material moves reliably and Cybercab manufacturing can scale.

This is a hands-on floor role. You will spend your time on equipment, panels, and systems - executing installs, supporting commissioning, fixing issues, and documenting what you find - under the same demand for speed, quality, and ownership that defines every Tesla product.

What You'll Do
  • Help install and bring up Cybercab production automation - process equipment, AMRs, conveyors, and material-handling systems - including checklists, I/O checkout, and basic functional tests with engineers
  • Diagnose and resolve common controls/equipment issues (sensors, actuators, wiring, network, basic PLC/HMI faults); escalate complex problems clearly to Controls Engineers
  • Assist with PLC/HMI work under engineer guidance (backups, simple program changes, screen updates, fix verification) and maintain backups, spare-parts awareness, and field documentation for fast recovery
  • Support panel builds, field wiring, terminations, and labeling to print; keep electrical drawings and as-built notes aligned with what's installed
  • Support AMR, conveyor, and related automation installation/checkout; partner with Maintenance and Production on material-flow equipment issues
  • Execute engineer-written test plans and commissioning steps; capture results, redlines, photos, and punch-list items so equipment is production-ready; support supplier/equipment buyoffs and occasional weekend/after-hours coverage when needed
  • Help train operators and technicians on basic operation and recovery; communicate clearly with Production, Maintenance, engineers, and suppliers

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Mechatronics, Electrical, Electronics, Automation, Industrial Technology, or a related field - or equivalent relevant experience
  • 2+ years in a manufacturing, automation, or industrial maintenance/controls technician role working on electromechanical equipment
  • Working knowledge of PLCs and HMIs (Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens preferred). Comfort reading ladder logic, forcing I/O for checkout, and following engineer direction for simple changes. Siemens TIA Portal exposure is a plus
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, use a multimeter, terminate wires, and safely work in control panels and field devices
  • Familiarity with conveyors, sensors, motors, and industrial equipment. Exposure to AGVs/AMRs or robotics is a strong plus
  • Comfortable working on the production floor, following safety rules, and supporting high-volume operations
  • Clear written and verbal communication; able to document issues and work effectively with operators, technicians, and engineers
