OVERVIEW
Merrick is seeking a Structural Engineer for our Energy, Manufacturing, and Bioprocessing group located in Richmond, VA. The job will consist of structural engineering design for industrial oil & gas, power plant, biofuels, Industrial Manufacturing, Food, Personal Care, and chemicals type facilities.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Engineering duties include but not limited to design of equipment support structures, piping supports, access platforms, walkways, pipe racks, buildings, foundations, retaining walls. The Structural Engineer will work independently performing entry to mid-level engineering design on projects while receiving close supervision of a lead engineer. The position requires teamwork skills to effectively interact with other Merrick engineers located in the employee's home office as well as with other engineers located in remote offices. Additionally, the employee must demonstrate the maturity required to occasionally work remotely without a supervisor immediately present. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily while staying within established schedules and budgets. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. The candidate must be able to develop structural designs, drawings, calculations, specifications, reports, and other similar design documents. Responsibilities:
- Analysis and design of structures for petrochemical facilities, power plants, biofuels, bioprocessing, and manufacturing facilities.
- Primarily structural steel and concrete design.
- Ability to work independently while completing assigned tasks.
- Working in a design team environment.
- Understanding of project scope, schedules, and budgets.
- Collaborating effectively with clients, contractors, fabricators, and other partnering companies.
- Meeting with clients to review design packages.
- Performing project site walkdowns and design review meetings periodically as required.
- Generating comprehensive and detailed engineering products, including technical reports and presentations, calculations, and specifications.
- Collaborating and providing input to CAD technicians to create design drawings.
- Ensuring internal communication and coordination of design efforts occurs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- Zero (0) - four (4) years of engineering experience.
- Must possess effective oral and written communication skills.
- Must be able to work with high degrees of autonomy.
- Familiarity with conventional structural design codes is a plus:
- AISC Steel Construction Manual
- ACI-318
- Successful completion of the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination is desired. The ability to obtain an FE certification and eventually a PE license is required.
- Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Internet software. In addition, experience in the following process software packages is advantageous:
- RISA 3D
- MathCAD
- CSI SAP 2000
- CSI SAFE
- AutoCAD
- Microsoft Teams
- Ability to travel periodically to client sites to perform site walk downs, collect data, and attend client meetings.
- Client projects for this position require US Citizenship.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree is recommended but not required.
- Prior internship.
- Local candidates preferred.
