Responsibilities:

JOB SUMMARY
Functions as a Neurologist performing primarily hospital-based medical services for patients requiring neurological care within the emergency department and nursing units. Responsibilities will also include reading neuro-diagnostic test results and providing outpatient neurological services as assigned. The Neuro-Hospitalist provides comprehensive evidence based care to a designated patient population. The Neuro-Hospitalist is responsible for patient care from evaluation in the emergency department through discharge of patients on the Neuro-Hospitalist service. The Neuro-Hospitalist is accountable for the delivery of quality measures that will provide excellence in personalized healthcare. The Neuro-Hospitalist will provide communication to community physicians to maintain a continuum of care for all patients.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Clinical Care: Provides hospital based neurological medicine services incorporating established practice standards to improve quality of care, length of stay, resource efficiency, fiscal accountability, morbidity and mortality rates and readmission rates. Provides 24/7 coverage, as needed, of patients requiring neurological care in assigned facilities. Responds to emergency department calls within 15 minutes by phone and 30 minutes in person. Responds to inpatient consults within two hours. Provides timely reading services for neurodiagnostic tests ordered within the assigned facilities. Provides outpatient neurological services as assigned to meet service line and organizational goals.
  • Leadership & Compliance: Participates in establishing a positive rapport with the community based neurologists and neurosurgeons as well as with the emergency department, critical care department, nursing, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, respiratory therapy and other appropriate service areas. Participates in the recruitment and retention of hospital-based physicians. Facilitates and supports the mentoring of other physicians, nurses, pharmacist and other healthcare professionals. Creates a climate for professional practice with other disciplines. Supports the vision and values of the organization. Attends and participates in the Neurosciences Sub-Committee and other service line committees as appropriate. Supports admission and transfer protocols, policies, procedures and guidelines related to the involvement of Neuro-Hospitalists. Collaborates with the Medical Director and Service Line Administrator to provide fiscal accountability for the service. Collaborates with Case Management and the Clinical Documentation Specialists. Utilizes Medical Director when necessary in difficult situations.
  • Research & Education: Plans, coordinates, facilitates and participates in educational programs related to neurosciences and neuro-hospitalist care. Participates in research activities within the Neuro-Hospitalist program for the purpose of improving the quality of care in the program. Collaborates with the Vice President for Research, Medical Director and Service Line Administrator to identify research opportunities associated with neurosciences and the neuro-hospitalist program. Participates with the Director of Medical Education and Medical Director of Academic Affairs to assure appropriate teaching opportunities for residents and medical students. Participates in the education of nurses and other ancillary professionals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
  • Doctorate MD & Graduate of an accredited Neurology residency with strong emphasis in acute care. Required
EXPERIENCE
  • Recent direct acute care clinical experience. Preferred
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - Certification Upon Hire Required
  • Board Certified Physician - Certification or Board Eligible physician in Neurology. Upon Hire Required
