Job Summary

The Lead Structured Cabling Technician is responsible for leading and performing complex fiber optic and structured cabling installations for large-scale commercial and data center projects. This position combines hands-on technical expertise in fiber splicing, termination, testing, troubleshooting, and infrastructure installation with team leadership and project coordination responsibilities. The role oversees crews, coordinates project requirements, supports material and labor planning, and ensures installations are completed according to project specifications, safety requirements, and quality standards. The ideal candidate has extensive data center and fiber infrastructure experience, a strong commercial construction background, and demonstrated experience leading large installation teams.

Job Responsibilities




  • Perform cable infrastructure and fiber rough-in installations.



  • Install, dress, route, manage, and label fiber and structured cabling.



  • Perform cable and fiber termination, ribbon splicing, and fusion splicing.



  • Operate fiber splicing equipment and related installation tools.



  • Install and configure single-mode and multimode fiber and various fiber connector types, including ST, LC, SC, and SC-APC.



  • Perform Fluke and OTDR testing to verify cable and fiber performance.



  • Troubleshoot fiber optic systems and resolve installation or performance issues.



  • Perform quality control inspections of fiber, cabling, and infrastructure installations.



  • Rack and stack equipment and complete server rack buildouts and rack elevations.



  • Install fiber trays, ladder racks, power trays, cabinets, cable management systems, and related infrastructure.



  • Receive materials and perform hardware assembly as required.



  • Perform Outside Plant (OSP) installations, including routing fiber into data center facilities.



  • Read, interpret, and follow blueprints and project installation specifications.



  • Identify required blueprint changes and submit change order information to the Project Manager.



  • Lead crews of 10 or more employees to complete large-scale commercial projects safely and efficiently.



  • Coordinate with general contractors, project stakeholders, and other onsite teams regarding project activities and requirements.



  • Conduct safety meetings and promote compliance with established safety procedures.



  • Forecast labor requirements based on project schedules and workload.



  • Identify and order appropriate project materials as needed.



  • Maintain professional written and verbal communication with colleagues, management, contractors, and project stakeholders.



  • Follow applicable safety requirements, including proper PPE use, jobsite housekeeping, and OSHA standards.




Job Requirements




  • 5+ years of data center technician experience.



  • 5+ years of fiber optic installation experience.



  • Experience performing fiber splicing, including fusion and ribbon splicing.



  • Experience leading and managing crews of 10 or more employees.



  • Low-voltage and commercial construction experience.



  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.



  • Active OSHA 10 certification preferred.



  • Knowledge of single-mode and multimode fiber, structured cabling systems, and common fiber connector types.



  • Experience using fiber splicing, Fluke, and OTDR testing equipment.



  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and installation specifications.



  • Strong troubleshooting, quality control, leadership, and project coordination skills.



  • Ability to use basic hand tools, including a multi-bit screwdriver, tape measure, snips, needle-nose pliers, channel-lock pliers, punch-down tool, flashlight, gloves, and tool pouch.



  • Ability to work safely on ladders and scissor lifts and in confined spaces.



  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.



  • Ability to stand and work on feet for the duration of the shift.



  • Ability to wear appropriate work boots, including steel-toe or composite-toe footwear.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Primary schedule is expected to be a standard Monday-Friday day shift.



  • Must be available to work overtime and night shifts based on project and site requirements.



  • Must be willing to travel to other sites for training as needed.



  • Once local site operations begin, work is expected to be primarily local.
