Responsibilities: JOB SUMMARY
The Lead Histotechnologist/Histotechnician oversees day-to-day operations of the department and performs technical procedures in the Histology and IHC laboratory and routine tasks include specimen embedding, FFPE sectioning, and staining. Trains and guides new and existing staff, troubleshoot problems, create, update and communicate new policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Oversees day-to-day bench duties of employees and organizes workflow and staffing as needed to maintain the most effective and efficient department operations. Writes and updates department schedule.
- Prepares sections of human tissue for microscopic examination and patient diagnosis, using techniques to embed (orient specimen in paraffin block), section (cut thin sections of tissue), stain (enhance contrast of tissue and highlight specific features of interest with routine hematoxylin and eosin stains), and mount tissue (adhere tissue onto glass slides), from surgical procedures.
- Monitors daily Immunohistochemistry workload by receiving IHC/SS orders and pending lists requests. Retrieves slides or blocks from request and performs IHC/SS by preparing, loads/unloads stainers and performs appropriate quality controls checks.
- Performs recuts and additional stains including special and immunohistochemistry stains, as requested by a Pathologist.
- Embeds tissue to insure correct orientation and positioning for sectioning.
- Performs and documents instrument and equipment maintenance and troubleshooting on all equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Maintains the internal Quality Control process daily by performing and recording appropriate quality control procedures and documents according to laboratory policy and procedure. Reviews and signs off on monthly charting and QC.
- Actively participates in laboratory programs established for the purpose of maintaining/improving the quality of laboratory services, individual growth, and safety in the work environment.
- Manages ordering and stocks supplies to ensure department is adequately stocked.
- Ensures compliance with all state, CLIA, CAP, OSHA and HIPAA regulations as applicable and incorporates these compliance practices into daily routines.
- Assists with writing, reviewing and revising SOP's.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
- High School Diploma or GED Required
- Associates Required
- Bachelors Required
EXPERIENCE
- 5 years Histology Lab experience Required
- Other Ability to read/write English language Required
- Other Successful completion of NAACLS Accredited Histotechnician program within last 5 years Preferred
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Histology Technician - Certification Required or
- Histology Technologist Certification - Certification Required
- Medical Technologist (AMT) - Certification QIHC Required
