How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As the Mgr, Cost Accounting, you will serve as the finance leader for manufacturing cost accounting across the Engineered Air Movement business. You will provide strategic financial insights that support operational excellence, inventory accuracy, profitability, and informed business decisions. Working closely with Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, Sales, and Finance leadership, you will oversee standard costing, inventory controls, variance analysis, forecasting, and financial reporting while driving continuous improvement initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and business performance. Acting as a trusted business partner, you will help identify opportunities to optimize costs, improve processes, and support profitable growth across multiple manufacturing locations.

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

Financial Reporting & Analysis
  • Lead annual planning for manufacturing standard costing and inventory accounting.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly reports covering material, labor, overhead, inventory, and manufacturing variances.
  • Develop and maintain standard cost models, gross margin analysis, COGM and COGS reporting.
  • Prepare inventory-related journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Develop executive dashboards and manufacturing KPIs.
  • Support weekly flash reporting, month-end close, forecasts, budgets, and long-range planning.
  • Present financial results, trends, risks, and recommendations to leadership.
Cost Management & Operational Partnership
  • Lead the annual standard cost roll and maintain costing integrity.
  • Partner with Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Procurement to ensure accurate product costing.
  • Analyze material, labor, overhead, price-volume-mix, efficiency, and spending variances.
  • Monitor commodity cost trends to support pricing and margin decisions.
  • Evaluate capital investments, make-versus-buy decisions, and operational improvement opportunities.
  • Support Lean and Continuous Improvement initiatives with financial analysis.
  • Serve as the primary finance business partner for manufacturing operations.
Compliance, Inventory & Controls
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, SOX, and company accounting policies.
  • Partner with the Inventory Analyst to ensure accurate inventory accounting.
  • Lead financial support for physical inventories and cycle counts.
  • Support internal and external audits and maintain cost accounting documentation.
Continuous Improvement & Business Support
  • Develop financial models and dashboards that improve decision making.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline reporting and improve data accuracy.
  • Collaborate across Operations, Engineering, Sales, Supply Chain, and Finance.
  • Lead projects that improve manufacturing efficiency, inventory management, and cost performance.

What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)

We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Engineering, or related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including manufacturing cost accounting.
  • Experience with standard costing, inventory accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Experience partnering with cross-functional manufacturing teams.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • CPA or CMA preferred.
  • Experience supporting multi-site manufacturing operations.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, SOX, inventory accounting, and standard costing.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar).
  • Power BI/Tableau experience preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, presentation, communication, and business partnering skills.

Travel & Working Environment

  • Primarily based in Mason, Ohio with regular interaction in manufacturing environments.
  • Occasional travel (10-15%) to support EAM locations, inventory observations, training, and meetings.
  • Ability to work in office and manufacturing settings and wear PPE as required.
