Primary Purpose of Department
The Honors College is an academic and support hub for academically motivated UNC Charlotte undergraduates, including all members of honors programs, merit scholars, and students seeking endorsement for nationally competitive awards.
Primary Purpose of Position
To advise incoming and first-year University Honors Program ( UHP) students and coordinate co-curricular programming for honors students and merit scholars. This position is committed to engaging honors students in personal development and self-assessment, orienting them to the requirements and expectations of UHP. Students are expected to develop plans to complete honors coursework and co-curricular requirements. This individual ensures that all honors students have access to accurate and relevant information about the Honors College, UHP, and relevant campus resources so that they can take initiative and responsibility for their success. This position provides relevant, developmental, enriching co-curricular programming for honors students. This individual upholds the expectations and standards of advising at Charlotte professionally and respectfully that reflect an appreciation for students from all backgrounds. This advisor works as a team member with the Honors College staff and reports to and fulfills other responsibilities as needed and assigned by the Associate Dean of the Honors College.
Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • Direct University Honors student programming, including honors workshops, community service activities, and annual honors events. Some night and weekend hours required.
  • Collaborate with directors of honors and merit scholar programs on activities for all honors students on campus.
  • With campus partners in the Office of Admissions, oversee the recruitment and onboarding of the incoming University Honors cohort by staffing recruiting events (SOAR, Admitted Students Day), and directing communication efforts to the incoming cohort.
  • Work as a team with Honors College staff, attending staff meetings, assisting with events, participating in the annual fall retreat, and producing material for the annual report in the late spring.
  • Coordinate University Honors housing list for Levine Hall and collaborate on programming with Housing & Residence Life.
  • Advise and mentor University Honors incoming and first-year students.
  • Conduct University Honors student programming assessments.
  • Advise UHP Student Association and Student Ambassadors.
  • Work with Honors College staff, maintain accurate records of University Honors students for priority registration, continuing in honors, probation, and graduation with honors.
  • Teach three credit hours in lower-division honors coursework per semester.
  • Organize honors student travel and participation at honors conferences.

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master's degree completed by July 1, 2026.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Master's degree and 1-2 years of direct experience advising, coaching, and/or counseling college students.
  • Demonstration of ability to establish rapport with individuals, inspire confidence, and build relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills that demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and the maintenance of confidentiality.
  • Experience presenting to groups of people utilizing relevant technology and best communication practices.
  • Experience with planning, organizing, and delivering student co-curricular programming.
  • Experience with high-achieving students.
