Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Technician.

The Research Technician performs technical laboratory duties and/or basic data analysis in support of a research project. The laboratory analyses at this level may involve sophisticated techniques that are generally learned on the job. This position may also analyze data and produce graphs and charts for publication. Nature of Work This position works on a grant or research project and performs specific analytical laboratory procedures, usually limited in number and repetitive. The position performs data recording and preliminary analysis and may prepare graphs and charts for publication. Work at this level is non-exempt and represents a basic level of scientific contribution involving some theoretical knowledge. This work is distinguished from Biological Scientist since standardized procedures and protocols are used. Research Technicians perform preliminary analysis of data and may produce graphs and charts for publication, rather than final analysis of data and drafting portions of publications.

Job Responsibilities:

General Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the organizations service standards and incorporates them into the performance of duties.

  • Cooperates, communicates and relates well to all members of medical center community.

  • Listens carefully to others in order to respond appropriately, answer questions or obtain needed information.

  • Communicates ideas, problems, suggestions, and messages in a timely and effective manner.

  • Maintains the confidentiality of all research information.

  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Recognizes problems as they occur and through the application of appropriate policy/ procedure, determines and/or recommends the appropriate solution.

  • Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties and asks appropriate questions when in doubt.

  • Utilizes reference sources/materials to endure accuracy in performing job tasks.

  • Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow-up attention.

Position Specific Responsibilities:

  • Performs basic lab duties under general supervision as well as more advanced duties under direct supervision. Performs standard laboratory procedures such as maintaining cell cultures requiring the use of sterile technique, radioisotope labeling, preparing slides using staining techniques, and performing assays for protein, RNA, DNA, or other cellular components.

  • Performs routine technical tasks and assists in the general maintenance of the lab.

  • General techniques in biochemistry, molecular biology and cell culture. Participates in standard lab experiments.

  • Coordinates the repair and preventative maintenance of lab equipment.

  • Assist in experiments using established protocols and procedures, and records results of experiments.

  • Cares for laboratory animals including census, procedures, and immunizations.

  • Performs studies with human blood and intestinal samples

  • Orders laboratory equipment & supplies, calibrates instruments, and prepares laboratory equipment for use.

  • Maintains proper stock of required lab supplies, reagents, and required inventories.

  • Keeps records of the conduct and outcome of laboratory analyses.

  • Monitors the work of student assistants.

  • Prepares graphs, charts and tables from experimental results for inclusion in presentations and publications.

  • May require some evenings and weekend work.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify you must have a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Life Sciences or a related field with one year of experience. Advanced (beyond basic lab training will be accepted in lieu of experience as assessed by the hiring Principal Investigator). Effective oral and written communication skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in bacteriology and/or molecular biology-basic cloning is preferred.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $55,649.99 - $55,650.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
