About the Department:


The GMU-TV network provides a wide array of award winning educational, informational, and public affairs programming to Northern Virginia, the nation's capital, and the world. Our mission is to support excellence in learning and teaching by producing quality educational and informational programming. We do this by creating video enhanced courses for distributed learning; programming promoting the research and scholarly activity of Mason faculty and students; and community outreach programming for public awareness and recruitment.


About the Position:


The Producer/Director is responsible for conceptualizing, final scripting, directing, shooting, and editing assigned GMU-TV productions under the guidance of the General Manager/Executive Producer or a Senior Producer. This position is also responsible for developing program ideas. Writes reports, maintains studio/facility equipment, and promotes and supports OUB/GMU-TV activities as assigned.


Responsibilities:


Producer/Director:



  • Conceptualize, script, direct, shoot, and edit assigned GMU-TV productions;
  • Meet with supervisor and/or assigned clients to receive production briefs and clarify scope;
  • Develop production concept/strategy and production schedule in collaboration with the General Manager/Executive Producer;
  • Serve as primary producer and director for assigned productions;
  • Supervise assigned production crew members on specific productions;
  • Ensure all assigned projects and tasks are completed within the deadline;
  • Manage multiple projects, and edit, design, and produce multi-media programs;
  • Follow up with General Manager/Executive Producer to ensure all completed projects are reviewed in a timely manner;
  • Explore new options and suggest ideas for production improvements. Stay current with industry trends and bring specific recommendations to senior staff regarding GMU-TV's workflow, processes, hardware, and software;
  • Seek professional development opportunities and participate in training;
  • Recommend and contribute to the development of new programming that supports Mason/OUB/GMU-TV goals and mission;
  • Provide frequent, constructive feedback to General Manager, Executive Producer, crew, and clients regarding production progress, challenges, and needs; and
  • Ensure crew has the necessary knowledge, skills, and/or abilities to accomplish goals. Educate and inform production crews about new or different procedures. Suggest areas for professional improvement. Ensure compliance with industry regulations (e.g., FCC) and with industry and campus standards.


Production Support:



  • Provide production support, serving as videographer, editor, audio technician, or other crew roles for assigned productions;
  • Assist other Producer/Directors with the development of creative concepts;
  • Complete duties as assigned by the General Manager within established deadlines. Follow established guidelines for production and policy;
  • Stay current with industry trends and make recommendations to management; and
  • Provide frequent, constructive feedback to General Manager/Executive Producer and crew, regarding production equipment needs.


University Citizen:



  • Help create a positive image for GMU-TV, OUB, and the university;
  • Present a positive, forward-looking image of the university and GMU-TV;
  • Provide tours of GMU-TV facilities as needed;
  • Make recommendations for promotional opportunities and/or goods and services;
  • Promote GMU-TV at various events;
  • Assist other members of OUB, and/or the university as assigned;
  • Participate in OUB events and committees;
  • Provide frequent, constructive feedback to General Manager/Executive Producer/assigned project leaders regarding concerns and needs;
  • Participate and take leadership roles in OUB projects and/or committees;
  • Contribute to customer service and outreach improvements; and
  • Identify methods to improve customer service and departmental education.


Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in broadcasting, film or video production, communication, multimedia design, or photography is required. An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of the college degree requirement;
  • Demonstrated professional video production or producer experience is required (typically, at least two years);
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in directing; lighting, audio acquisition, and videography techniques in field and studio situations; nonlinear editing; and video compression, basic equipment troubleshooting and equipment maintenance;
  • Expertise in the operation of professional studio and field video production equipment;
  • Proficiency in scriptwriting, copywriting, or creative directing (especially in the areas of documentary, educational, or corporate production);
  • Demonstrated excellent post-production skills;
  • Well organized and responsible for production planning, coordination, and scheduling;
  • Ability to work independently and within a production team to conceptualize and execute media/production solutions, while meeting deadlines and clearly communicating with colleagues;
  • Ability to work independently and with GMU-TV team members to ensure quality, on-time and within budget delivery with every production;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines under direct supervision and independently;
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs (with or without reasonable accommodation);
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time;
  • Ability to work as a team player with diverse populations, and willingness to work flexible shifts;
  • Passion for continually developing professional skills and watching tutorials, and reading trade forums and professional literature to stay informed of trends and innovations in the production industry; and
  • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in related field;
  • Experience designing 2D/3D graphics and motion graphics; and
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, Macs, and Microsoft Office.
