What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an R&D Systems Engineer to join the W93/Mk7 Requirements Team and take a leading role in shaping the first ND Phase-X system developed in decades. This unique opportunity places you at the heart of innovation, collaborating with top experts across Sandia National Laboratories and the broader Nuclear Security Enterprise. Your work will drive advancements that serve as a force multiplier for national security.

In this role, you will be at the forefront of developing and deriving the requirements that define system and component designs to meet critical federal customer needs. You will help build the foundation for how the W93/Mk7 Program executes, maintaining a clear focus on the big picture and influencing the product realization process from its earliest stages. Additionally, you will engage with new Digital Engineering tools and processes that are setting the standard for future modernization programs.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Collaborate with your team to create and establish the baseline requirements for the program
  • Work across systems and partner organizations to negotiate derived and interface requirements
  • Support and prepare materials for internal and external requirements reviews
  • Author key documents, develop processes, and enhance tool capabilities to establish W93 requirements and requirements mapping
  • Use ERMS and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools, including DOORS NEXT and Cameo software, to perform system modeling and derive requirements.
  • Engage regularly with partners at Sandia, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lockheed Martin Space, Applied Physics Lab, Navy Strategic Programs, and the National Nuclear Security Administration

This position will require some travel. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

  • Active DOE Q level clearance or equivalent to start
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D Systems candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.

  • Proficiency with requirements management tools such as DOORS
  • Experience with modeling and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approaches and tools, including Cameo software
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and execute technical work while managing multiple competing priorities with urgency and attention to detail
  • Strong negotiation skills to balance competing requirements and achieve optimal system-level outcomes
  • Proven ability to integrate and collaborate effectively across cross-organizational, multidisciplinary technical teams to resolve issues and conduct trade-offs
  • Ability to work independently and lead initiatives, as well as contribute effectively within team environments
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and support less experienced engineers to foster team growth and knowledge sharing
About Our Team

The W93 System Integration Department has System-Level Engineering and Integration responsibility for the W93/Mk7 Navy Strategic Reentry System Program. The department provides technical leadership in areas such as requirements development, systems engineering processes, ALT950 PRT, Trainers PRT, and Risk. We work closely with our partners and program stakeholders including NNSA Federal Program Managers, the US Navy, Lockheed Martin Space, Los Alamos National Lab, Kansas City National Security Campus, Pantex, the UK Atomic Weapons Establishment, and many others to coordinate expertise and foster innovation in efforts to ensure technical integration across all program areas.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. Under federal law, citizens and agents of the People's Republic of China, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea, and the Russian Federation are generally prohibited from accessing Sandia National Laboratories. Accordingly, such individuals will not be considered for employment unless they are also a citizen of the United States.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
