SUMMARY

This position is responsible for supporting the Bank's accounting close, financial reporting, regulatory reporting, and related internal control activities. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate financial records, preparing and reviewing journal entries, performing account reconciliations and analysis, supporting consolidated financial statements, and assisting with SEC, regulatory, audit, and management reporting requirements. The position also evaluates accounting and reporting processes, identifies opportunities for standardization and automation, and supports the effective use of technology tools to improve accuracy, efficiency, documentation, and control effectiveness. This role requires knowledge of banking, general accounting, GAAP, SEC reporting, regulatory reporting, and internal control over financial reporting requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complies with and stays informed of applicable policies and procedures, accounting standards, SEC and regulatory requirements, and federal and state laws applicable to the position.
  • Maintains accurate and current financial records, including general ledger activity and related supporting documentation, in accordance with company policies, GAAP, SEC, regulatory, and ICFR requirements.
  • Reviews journal entries and ensure transactions are recorded accurately and timely.
  • Performs and reviews general ledger, balance sheet, and income statement account reconciliations and analysis to support accurate financial reporting.
  • Supports general ledger maintenance, including proper integration and interface with core and other systems that impact accounting and reporting.
  • Supports the month-end and quarter-end close processes, including trend analysis, account review, and preparation of monthly and consolidated financial statements and internal reports.
  • Performs assigned accounting functions, which may include but not limited to loans, accruals, deposits, borrowings, equity, and other balance sheet or income statement areas.
  • Analyzes and records intercompany relationships and transactions between the Bank, subsidiaries, and Bank Holding Company and supports proper consolidation and elimination.
  • Assists with quarterly earnings release support, investor presentation schedules, related public reporting support, and applicable Form 8-K filing documentation.
  • Assists with SEC reporting processes and filings, including Annual Reports on Form 10-K, Quarterly Reports on Form 10-Q, Form 8-K filings, and other SEC reporting requirements.
  • Prepares or supports related footnote schedules in accordance with GAAP for external reporting purposes.
  • Prepares or supports banking regulatory reports, including the Bank's Call Report and Federal Reserve reports, including FR Y reports, in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Monitors and assists with the interpretation of new GAAP, SEC, and regulatory reporting guidance applicable to assigned responsibilities.
  • Collaborates with other departments to obtain, review, and validate information used in earnings releases, external filings, regulatory reports, and internal management reporting.
  • Assists with income tax reporting support, audit and regulatory examination materials, and related documentation requests.
  • Develops and maintains procedures, process documentation, reconciliations, and other support used in accounting and financial reporting activities.
  • Evaluates accounting, financial reporting, regulatory reporting, reconciliation, and close processes to identify opportunities for standardization, process improvement, automation, and enhanced control effectiveness.
  • Supports the use of technology tools, reporting applications, data queries, workflow tools, and automation solutions to improve accuracy, efficiency, repeatability, and documentation of accounting and reporting processes.
  • Assists with ad hoc reporting, pro forma analysis, special projects, and cross-training within the Accounting and Financial Reporting department.
  • Provides training, guidance, and knowledge-sharing to staff-level team members to support departmental coverage, cross-training, skill development, and advancement readiness.
  • Provides, presents, and promotes The Citizens Experience to all external and internal customers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in Business, Accounting, or Finance from a four-year college or university; four to seven years of related finance/accounting experience in the financial services industry in a fast-paced environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, legal documents, technical procedures, professional journals, regulatory guidance, and government regulations. Ability to respond to common inquiries or requests from customers, regulatory agencies, auditors, managers, or members of the business community. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure documentation, and to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, ratios, and other practical financial calculations. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

COMPUTER & SOFTWARE SKILLS

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel is preferable.
  • Ability to learn and use accounting, reporting, reconciliation, general ledger, and regulatory reporting systems applicable to assigned responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of technology-enabled reporting, data analysis, automation, and workflow tools is preferred, including the ability to evaluate system outputs, identify process gaps, and recommend practical improvements.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple tasks and/or projects accurately within competing demands and timelines.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to review financial information, identify issues, research variances, and support timely resolution.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain attention to detail, and work independently while escalating matters appropriately.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Accounting, Finance, Operations, Technology, Internal Audit, external auditors, and other business partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate processes, leverage technology tools, and recommend practical automation or workflow enhancements that support accurate, timely, and well-controlled financial reporting.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and share technical knowledge with team members to support cross-coverage, process continuity, and professional development.
